Director, Marketing

The Opportunity

Marketing and Communications is critical to the profile of Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity. The role is also important to build engagement with artists, faculty, and audiences that will ensure the Centre’s global identity and financial success. The goals of the department are to effectively position Banff Centre as Canada’s leading arts and leadership training institute, and one of the most important in the world.

The Director of Marketing oversees the execution and implementation of strategic marketing initiatives across a range of portfolios and key performance indicators. This role guides the strategic direction and planning of the marketing team, and working closely with the Director of Communications, executes campaigns to assist Banff Centre to recruit quality participants, to build digital and physical audiences to showcase our participants, faculty, and guest artists, to engage with our stakeholders locally, nationally, and internationally, and to collaborate with Fundraising and Development, Strategic Sponsorship, Conferences, Hospitality, and fitness and recreation areas to maximize community engagement and enterprise revenue.

This role is responsible for leading Banff Centre’s marketing efforts, including day to day management of a team and ongoing collaboration with Communications. The marketing team develops and implements creative marketing campaigns in support of Banff Centre’s Arts, Leadership, and Mountain Culture Programs, Festivals, Events, Exhibitions, Development initiatives, hotel, conferences, convening, and food and beverage operations.

Roles and Responsibilities

Reporting to Executive Director, Marketing and Communication, below are some key accountabilities:

Planning and Financial

  • Works collaboratively with key stakeholders to build annual plans with strategies for raising the profile of the organization and its programs, conferences, events, and donor relations
  • Leads the development of the department’s annual budget and participates in ongoing forecasting.
  • Negotiates and approves contracts, including media buys, ensuring compliance with organizational processes and policies.

Human Resources, Team Building and Interdivisional Cooperation

  • Fosters an internal culture that maintains the highest standards for customer service, excellence of staff, participant and guest experience, and fiscal, operational, and organizational integrity.
  • Ensures a positive and safe work environment for all Banff employees, aligned with Banff Centre’s policies including but not limited to code of ethics, anti-harassment policies, contractual obligations, and strategic directions.
  • Maintains effective working relationships with team members, internal partners, customers, the union and other stakeholders.
  • Recruits, hires, and mentors staff, assigning work, and measuring their performance in relation to the strategic standards of excellence and goals. Works closely with the Human Resources Team to ensure policies, procedures, contractual, legislative and work culture expectations are met.
  • Ensures that employees fully understand their roles, responsibilities, and performance standards and provide ongoing formal and informal feedback, coaching and support as employees strive to achieve expectations.

Change Management

  • Embraces change and works within the organization to support positive, clear articulation and engagement across Banff Centre. This role will occasionally represent the Marketing team on organizational project work, and will support Communications needs around change management.

Contacts

  • Extensive external contact outreach ranging from contractors to senior business/agency executives to social media and digital community leaders. Such discussions may involve exchange of information, contract negotiations, and/or exploration and planning of partnership activities;
  • Extensive internal contact with members of the department staff and staff of other departments concerning collaborative programs, operational issues, financial management.

Marketing Strategy

  • Develops marketing strategy to support various Banff Centre stakeholders, including Conferences, Hospitality, Food and Beverage, Human Resources, Fundraising/Development, Mountain Culture, Arts, Leadership, and community engagement.
  • Creates marketing and communications toolkits to support Banff Centre teams in achieving wider organizational goals.
  • Oversees Banff Centre signage strategy including new requests.

Project Management and Team Workflow

  • Oversees the input and output at the project level as it relates to graphic design requests from within the marketing and communications department, and from across Banff Centre.
  • Works with the management team to prioritize needs and communicate alignment across teams to ensure a culture aligned to Banff Centre goals.
  • Oversees the procurement process related to merchandise, printed marketing materials (including brochures and guides), and ensures proper quote procedure and delivery timelines.

Educational Program and Event Marketing

  • Works with the appropriate Marketing and Communications team members to develop and oversee the marketing strategies and operations for promoting events and activities at Banff Centre, as well as promoting and recruiting for arts and leadership programs.

Banffcentre.ca

  • Works closely with the Marketing team, including the Manager of Digital Marketing Platforms, to ensure optimal performance, learning, and useability of the organizations’ website.
  • Collaborates with the management team of Marketing & Communications to optimize the department and improve workflow.
Qualifications and Educational Requirements
  • At minimum, a bachelor’s degree and/or a college diploma in marketing or a related field. A master’s degree is an asset
  • 10+ years progressively responsible marketing and management experience in directly related skill areas is required.
  • Two years’ experience at the Director level preferred.
  • Experience in the post-secondary sector and/or arts and culture is an asset.
  • Exemplary leadership skills with strong experience in team building and staff motivation.
  • Hands on leader, who can roll-up their sleeves to deliver.
  • Strategic planning and budget planning and management experience.
  • Ability to analyze, plan and implement at the “big picture” as well as program level.
  • Ability and experience in managing multiple projects with appropriate attention to detail.
  • Ability to operate with ambiguity.
  • A deep appreciation for the arts, education and mountain culture, and understanding how to tell the Banff Centre story through conventional and digital means
Employment Terms and Benefits
  • In accordance with the terms of employment governing Management/PSP employees, this is a salaried, fulltime position, subject to a 6-month probationary period.
  • The salary range for this position is $82,455 - $122,451 based on experience.
  • The successful candidate will enjoy twenty paid vacation days and four personal days annually, extended medical and dental benefits, and participation in an employer-matched pension plan.
