Job Description
Key Responsibilities
- Provides day-to-day legal research, counsel, and guidance on legal/compliance questions or issues, including conducting training presentations for business units, as necessary.
- Develops, revises, and maintains insurance policy forms and endorsements for all enterprise product lines.
- Prepares internal corporate policies and procedures documentation and reviews and/or drafts contracts and legal documents, such as NDAs and vendor agreements.
- Provides counsel on coverage interpretations to assist Underwriting and Claims with issues raised by external partners or clients and assists with litigation management.
- Monitors, evaluates, and advises business areas regarding legislative and regulatory activity at federal and provincial/territorial levels, as well as industry developments, to ensure compliance.
- Reviews and approves marketing material and risk management presentations and articles, ensuring they accurately reflect product content and comply with all applicable laws. Interfaces with marketing, compliance, legal, and communications departments as appropriate.
- Supports high-priority legal and compliance initiatives, including knowledge management, workflow improvements, and legal expense management.
- May perform additional duties as assigned.
Skills, Knowledge & Experience
- Deep knowledge of the insurance industry, including product development, underwriting, claims, legal, and regulatory aspects.
- Excellent verbal and written communication, negotiation, and presentation skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Interpersonal, consultative, and communication skills to interact effectively with business units and external contacts.
- Ability to exercise independent judgment and handle confidential and sensitive information appropriately.
- Proactive mindset with a long-term vision aligned with business goals.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe, and other relevant software systems.
Education & Experience
- Qualified lawyer in good standing with 10+ years of post-qualification experience (LL.B or JD); in-house experience preferred.
- Bilingualism in French and English is an asset.
