Job Description
As Director, Legal Affairs, you will be responsible for managing and overseeing the company’s day-to-day legal activities in the shipbuilding and ship repair industry, including contracting with the Government of Canada. You will ensure compliance with legal obligations, negotiate contracts, manage legal disputes and risks, and provide legal support to various departments within the company. Additionally, you will lead and supervise a team of lawyers. More specifically, you will :
- Advise and support a diverse network of stakeholders (senior management, project management, contract management, supply chain, HR, etc.) on a wide range of legal matters.
- Actively lead the drafting, review, and negotiation of a complex portfolio of contracts and subcontracts, including those with the Government of Canada, commercial partners, and sophisticated subcontractors.
- Develop and implement policies and procedures to streamline the provision of legal services across the organization.
- Oversee litigation cases and manage relationships with external counsel, particularly in matters related to government contracts, regulatory compliance, and disputes.
- Develop and implement best practices to ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements specific to government contracting, including federal regulations and standards.
- Monitor legal developments, regulatory changes, and government contracting procedures that impact the organization.
- Train teams on legal best practices, regulatory compliance, and specific legal issues related to government contracting and the maritime sector.
- Manage legal risks and recommend corrective or preventive actions as needed.
- Lead and supervise a team of lawyers, ensuring effective task allocation and high-quality work output.

Qualifications
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) or Bachelor of Laws (LL. B.).
- Minimum of ten years of experience practising commercial law in a law firm, government agency, or corporate environment.
- Membership in a Canadian bar association.
- Strong knowledge of business law, contract law, and regulatory requirements specific to government procurement (strong asset).
- Proven experience in negotiating contracts with the Government of Canada and good understanding the intricacies of government procurement processes.
- Experience in managing litigation related to government contracts, regulatory compliance, and industry-specific disputes.
- Experience in leading or managing a legal team (preferred).
- Familiarity with federal regulations and legal frameworks applicable to federal procurement activities.
- Good knowledge of office tools and legal management software.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple files simultaneously.
