Overview

Director, Health & Safety (Capital Projects Delivery) – Executive Search / Executive Recruitment

JUST HR has been retained by a global mining producer with an impressive history and clear leadership position in the mining sector. The Director will report directly to the Chief Project Delivery Officer and will be embedded in the project delivery group, leading strategic safety programs across a portfolio of major construction projects. This leadership role is vital to ensuring that workplace health and safety is rooted in every project stage—from design to commissioning.

The Director will work closely with executive leadership and project teams to ensure high standards, drive enterprise-wide initiatives, and reduce critical risks, particularly those that could result in serious injuries or fatalities. This position helps shape a proactive safety culture and ensures consistent performance across domestic and international sites. With a global business spanning Canada, the US, Chile, Peru & Mexico, the Director will be required to visit site teams regularly to build relationships and ensure a strong health and safety culture continues in every facet of our client’s operations.

Responsibilities
  • Champion a culture of safety and lead by example across global project sites
  • Align project health and safety strategies with enterprise-wide standards and priorities
  • Embed safety considerations into all phases of project development and execution
  • Support project directors in risk assessment, controls implementation, and H&S planning
  • Monitor contractor performance and ensure safety requirements are included in all contracts
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a global team of health and safety professionals
  • Oversee audits, inspections, and critical incident investigations across project sites
  • Track and report on key safety metrics and lead improvement initiatives based on data
  • Guide the implementation of high-level risk controls for serious injury and fatality prevention
  • Foster alignment between enterprise H&S policies and project-level execution
Requirements
  • Degree in Health & Safety, Environmental Sciences, or a related discipline
  • 15+ years of site safety experience, with 10+ years leading large-scale construction projects
  • Proven experience leading safety efforts in an owner’s team and coordinating with EPCM contractors
  • Strong knowledge of H&S systems, regulatory standards, and critical risk controls
  • Track record of implementing safety improvements in complex, high-risk environments
  • Skilled in occupational health, hygiene programs, audits, and incident analysis (e.g., ICAM)
  • Ability to work across diverse geographies and adapt to varied climates and altitudes
  • Spanish language skills and international experience (Canada, US, Chile, Peru, Mexico) are assets
  • Willingness to travel up to 30%, including to high-altitude sites
Remuneration
  • 200,000 - $225,000 per year—flexibility may be considered for highly qualified candidates
  • Overall compensation also includes annual bonus of 25%
  • A generous long-term incentive plan including RSUs and stock options is also included
  • The final plan will be dependent on experience and internal equity
