Job summary

The Canadian Poultry & Egg Processors (CPEP) in Ottawa seeks a Director, Government Relations to lead advocacy for Canada’s poultry and egg sectors and shape policy input. This new role will build strong relationships with federal departments and agencies and drive industry representation across the value chain.

The position requires extensive experience in public affairs and lobbying, with a collaborative approach and readiness to travel across Canada.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years experience in public affairs, government relations, or political environment.
  • Strong understanding of the federal government ecosystem.
  • Demonstrated lobbying experience and government engagement strategies.
  • Must meet the requirements to be a registered lobbyist.
  • Fluency in official languages preferred.
  • Willingness to travel within Canada.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365 suite.
  • Knowledge of agriculture, food processing and poultry & egg processing is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement government relations and advocacy strategies focused on federal government.
  • Lead the government relations committee and report to the Board.
  • Collaborate with team to understand sector issues and assist with advocacy.
  • Contribute to government consultations affecting poultry and egg processors.
  • Coordinate with producer agencies and other food processing associations.

Job Posting: Director, Government Relations

The Canadian Poultry and Egg Processors (CPEP) is the national trade organization representing the interests of more than 170 Canadian poultry processing, egg grading and processing and hatchery establishments. Our member companies process over 90% of Canada’s chicken, turkey, eggs and hatching eggs. CPEP’s team is based in Ottawa.


Position Overview

CPEP is seeking a Director, Government Relations to lead government relations and advocacy on behalf of Canada’s poultry and egg processors and hatcheries. The Director will work collaboratively with other members of the CPEP team to represent the interests of all sectors under the CPEP umbrella.

This is a new position at the organization as CPEP wants to develop strong relations with key government departments and agencies. This is an exciting opportunity to work in the growing poultry and egg industry.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement the CPEP government relations and advocacy strategies, with a focus on federal government;
  • Lead the CPEP government relations committee, reporting to the CPEP Board of Directors;
  • Work closely with the CPEP team to ensure comprehension of sector issues and assist with advocacy as needed;
  • Contribute to government consultations on issues impacting poultry and egg processors;
  • Work closely with counterparts at producer agencies and other food processing associations;
  • Represent CPEP in industry, government, and stakeholder meetings.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Minimum 5 years experience in public affairs, government relations, or political environment;
  • Strong understanding of the federal government ecosystem;
  • Demonstrated successful experience in lobbying activities and government engagement strategies;
  • Familiarity with the Lobbying Act and the lobbyist registration system;
  • Must meet the requirements to be a registered lobbyist;
  • Exceptional relationship management, written and oral communication, and collaboration skills;
  • Ability to multi-task, to work independently within a small staff environment, to have flexible working hours when required and to travel regularly within Canada;
  • Fluency in both official languages preferred;
  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365 suite of products;
  • Knowledge of agriculture, food processing and poultry & egg processing would provide a distinct advantage.

Compensation & Office Policies

The CPEP office is based in Ottawa and has a hybrid office policy. The full-time position offers a competitive salary and benefits package commensurate with experience.
