Job description

The Canada Segment Financial Reporting Shared Service Centre (FSSC) is a dynamic team of high-energy finance professionals who serve as trusted advisors to the Canadian Segment business units and the Finance leadership team.

Reporting to the AVP, FSSC, the Director, Financial Reporting will lead and inspire a team to produce high-quality financial packages for the Group Insurance and Affinity Markets businesses. The Director will manage the team through maintaining strong controls over the monthly and quarterly reporting of financial results, provide insights into key drivers through written commentary, and drive finance transformation. Success in this role requires building strong relationships across all levels and fields within the global company, including the Group Insurance and Affinity finance teams.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Financial Reporting and Analysis:

  • Serve as a key finance partner for the CFO of Group Insurance and the CFO of Affinity Markets.

  • Optimize resources to deliver high-quality quarterly and annual financial reports.

  • Provide valuable financial analysis and clear, concise commentary on results.

  • Oversight of Internal Controls:

  • Maintain a robust control environment, ensuring effective internal controls, including SOX controls.

  • Assess the reasonability of accounting models and review data for accuracy.

  • Leadership in Financial Transformation:

  • Drive finance transformation initiatives by championing the development and implementation of CAO transformation goals.

  • Collaborate with business partners to innovate and improve financial processes.

  • Team Leadership and Development:

  • Provide strong leadership and coaching to a team of financial professionals.

  • Identify strengths and needs of team members, allocate work effectively, and foster an environment of innovation.

  • Relationship Building and Communication:

  • Establish trust and credibility with Finance management across the Canadian Segment, particularly with Business Unit CFOs and their teams.

  • Build effective business partnerships with leaders and staff of other teams and SSCs, including the Controls COE, Expense COE, ASSC, Tax, and Group Controllers.

  • Communicate complex financial concepts clearly and concisely, maintaining high standards in all interactions.

Required Qualifications:

  • Accounting designation (CPA) with 8+ years of relevant experience in progressive accounting roles (Life Insurance experience is a definite asset).

  • University degree or equivalent experience in business or finance.

  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate, negotiate, and influence effectively.

  • Self-starter, with strong problem-solving and analytical skills.

  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality in all aspects of work.

  • Results-oriented, able to manage tight timelines and challenging priorities.

  • Familiarity with Manulife’s financial general ledger and related reporting systems (such as Lawson and Essbase) is a plus.

  • Excellent customer focus and commitment to quality.

  • Demonstrated leadership skills to inspire, engage, and provide clear direction to staff while coaching and motivating to achieve objectives.

  • Strong business acumen with the ability to communicate complex financial concepts and results clearly and concisely (verbal & written).

  • Ability to challenge the status quo and deliver new/innovative improvements to financial processes.
