The Opportunity

Reporting the Chief Financial Officer, the Director, Finance & Technology provides strategic and operational leadership for all accounting, financial reporting and technology functions at Edmonton Community Foundation (ECF). This includes oversight of financial systems, internal controls, audits, payroll, benefits administration, and the preparation and presentation of accurate financial and statistical reports. As a member of ECF’s senior leadership team, the Director contributes to long-term planning and organizational strategy, while also overseeing core administrative functions including Finance, IT, office administration, and facilities management.

  • Provide strategic financial leadership by guiding the Finance team, supporting the CFO, and advising the Audit Committee and Board with expert analysis, reporting, and recommendations aligned with ECF’s purpose, values and strategic objectives.
  • Ensure the integrity of financial operations through the design and maintenance of effective internal controls, accounting systems, policies, and processes that support accurate, compliant, and scalable financial reporting.
  • Oversee financial reporting and audits, including the preparation of consolidated and non-consolidated financial statements, audit-ready materials, and statutory filings (e.g., T3010, T2, T3, T4, GST), while meeting all regulatory requirements.
  • Manage comprehensive revenue and expense functions, including budgeting, fund setup and classification, accounts receivable / payable, operational and capital expenditures, and grant disbursements – ensuring accuracy, compliance, and alignment with internal policies.
  • Drive continuous improvement in financial systems and workflows, optimizing efficiency, scalability, and the user experience for both internal and external stakeholders, while preparing clear financial data for external publications and Board communications.

Cash Flow Management :

  • Provide strategic oversight of payment and transfer processes, ensuring alignment with internal financial controls and approval frameworks.
  • Oversee the disbursement of funds for operational activities, grantmaking, scholarships, and capital investments, ensuring timeliness and compliance.
  • Ensure organizational adherence to Disbursement Quota obligations under the Income Tax Act, proactively identifying and addressing potential risks.
  • Maintain and review a forward-looking six-month cash flow projection in accordance with the approved Cash Flow Policy, incorporating all major inflows and outflows, including operating and administrative costs, granting commitments, and investment-related transactions.
  • Provide leadership and oversight for payroll administration, ensuring timely and accurate processing of semi-monthly payroll, statutory remittances, and the electronic filing of annual T4s in compliance with legislative requirements.
  • Ensure effective systems and processes are in place for the accurate onboarding of new employees and timely updates to salary, employment status, and post-probation entitlements, including benefits activation and RRSP enrollment.
  • Technology :

  • In collaboration with our external service provider(s), lead the identification, procurement, implementation and evolution of technology systems and solutions that enhance efficiency, data integrity, security, and user experience.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain IT-related policies, procedures, and standards to ensure consistency, compliance, security and risk mitigation.
  • Ensure comprehensive training and ongoing support are provided to staff to maximize system effectiveness and adoption.
  • Oversee vendor relationships and lead negotiations for software licensing, support contracts, and other technology services.
  • Administration & Facility Management :

  • Manage relationships and service delivery related to property and facility management vendors.
  • Manages all contracts, leases and other financial or related legal commitments.
  • Responsible for the comprehensive management of the organization’s insurance portfolio, including Directors & Officers (D&O), Errors & Omissions (E&O), general liability, and property insurance—ensuring adequate coverage, risk mitigation, timely renewals, and alignment with organizational needs and regulatory requirements.
  • The Ideal Candidate

    As the ideal candidate, you will possess the following qualifications :

  • A university degree in Commerce, Business Administration, Finance or a directly related field combined with a minimum of eight years of progressively responsible professional experience in accounting and finance, including a minimum of six years of leadership experience. Equivalent combinations of related post-secondary education and directly related work experience will be considered.
  • A Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation is required.
  • You will have a proven track record and expertise in end-to-end accounting operations, audit oversight, and comprehensive financial reporting.
  • Experience with fund accounting, investment accounting and endowment fund management is strongly preferred.
  • Advanced knowledge of Canadian Accounting Standards for Not-For-Profit Organizations (ASNPO) along with accounting standards for Private Enterprises (ASPE), including fund and investment accounting are an asset.
  • You are a proactive and detail-oriented individual with strong analytical abilities and a solid foundation in financial and investment principles, enabling you to interpret data, assess trends, and support sound financial decision-making.
  • Additional requirements include :

  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage diverse audiences through strong writing, speaking, listening, and presentation abilities, and a clear talent for translating complex financial concepts for non-financial stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to build, mentor, and lead high-performing finance teams while fostering strong cross-functional collaboration and partnerships across departments.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and practical application of legal and regulatory requirements related to accounting and financial management, including tax compliance, fiduciary responsibilities, and adherence to industry best practices.
  • Experience with ERP, CRM systems and financial platforms such as Salesforce and Sage Intaact.
  • Excellent skill and proficiency with desktop and cloud-based applications (e.g. MS365, Outlook, Word Excel, Sharepoint).
  • Demonstrated capacity for strategic thinking, systems development, and continuous improvement.
  • Exceptional attention to detail, with the ability to accurately manage complex information, identify discrepancies, and ensure high standards of quality and precision in all work.
  • Demonstrates high ethical standards, sound judgment, and discretion when managing sensitive information.
  • Superior organizational skills with ability to prioritize and manage multiple initiatives.
  • High degree of initiative and ability to work collaboratively as part of a team and independently.
  • Demonstrated aptitude in managing IT infrastructure and leading technology system evolution.
