We are looking for an experienced Pension Lawyer to join our Pension Legal and Plan Administration (PLPA) team in Toronto as a Director reporting to the Vice President of the PLPA. As a member of the team, you will provide legal advice and design solutions on issues like plan design, case escalations, complex plan administration, and broader pension initiatives. You will interact with internal and external stakeholders, always upholding OMERS' vision and core mission.

As a Director in the PLPA, you will be a subject-matter expert, bringing a legal lens to projects. The successful candidate should have an advanced understanding of defined benefit pension fundamentals to support key legal projects and facilitate innovation in governance and administration to meet evolving stakeholder needs.

We believe in the importance of time together in the office for OMERS and Oxford, the strength of our employees, and the work we do for our pension members. Our flexible hybrid work guidelines require teams to come to the office at least 4 days per week.

Responsibilities include:

  1. Advice related to the day-to-day administration and interpretation of the OMERS pension plans
  2. Case file management (including internal processes and litigation matters)
  3. Providing advice on legal and governance requirements, drafting policies and procedures
  4. Monitoring legislative and regulatory reforms, industry developments, and recommending responses
  5. Preparing pension materials like amendments, policies, communication materials, and plan documents
  6. Reviewing and developing reports and presentations for Boards, leadership, and communications

To succeed, you should:

  • Be qualified to practice law in Ontario
  • Have at least 6 years of experience in pension legal work in Ontario
  • Possess deep knowledge of pension law, including Income Tax Act provisions
  • Have experience in pension plan administration, design, communications, and policy development

Beneficial qualifications include:

  • Experience in legal and compliance reviews of pension administration and communications
  • Knowledge of related legal areas like trust, family, employment, estate law, and pension investment rules
  • Public sector experience, particularly with public pension plans

  • Excellent written and oral communication, with attention to detail and audience tailoring
  • Teamwork and collaboration skills
  • Strong analytical skills to evaluate complex situations and synthesize information
