Job Description

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Direct the work activities and manage the performance and development of subordinate staff in line with corporate strategy.
  • Coach, lead, and develop underwriters; oversee underwriting training development.
  • Collaborate with senior management to develop and implement underwriting policies, marketing strategies, and business plans.
  • Create and execute operating plans to grow the business and meet strategic goals.
  • Review and oversee underwriting policy application and pricing for risks within an assigned book of business.
  • Market insurance products and services to the brokerage community to drive business growth.
  • Build and maintain broker relationships to ensure profitable outcomes.
  • Report on business progress to senior management.
  • Stay informed on provincial and federal regulations, industry trends, and market activity.
  • Represent the company in industry trade groups.

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

  • Strong leadership, coaching, and development skills for underwriting teams.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and presentation abilities.
  • Effective interaction with internal and external business partners at all levels.
  • Senior technical underwriting expertise and people management skills.
  • Deep knowledge of insurance principles, practices, and procedures.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills; capable of managing strategic initiatives and delivering results.
  • Ability to handle ambiguous situations and resolve complex business issues creatively.
  • Contribute to setting long-term goals for the business unit.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and other business software.

Education and Experience

  • MBA or equivalent experience; CIP or CRM designation is an asset.
  • Minimum of 8-10 years of senior technical underwriting and management experience with proven results.
