Job description

SiteTalent is partnering with a highly respected Vancouver-based general contractor to find a Director of Commercial Construction. Our client is a well-established and growing builder known for delivering major commercial and mixed-use projects across the Lower Mainland. They've built their reputation on transparency, accountability, and a team-first culture that values people as much as performance. This is a company where leadership means something - and where the right person will have a genuine seat at the table.

Summary

The Director of Commercial Construction is a senior leadership role responsible for overseeing the delivery of the company's commercial construction portfolio - from pursuit through to project closeout. Reporting directly to the President, you will lead a commercial division of approximately 50 people, with full accountability for people, performance, project execution, client relationships, and profitability.

This is not a senior project management role. It is a true business leadership position. You will own the numbers - P&L accountability, margin protection, risk management - while driving executional excellence and consistency across all projects. You'll work closely with pre-construction, operations, and business development to ensure seamless handovers, high-performance teams, and best-in-class project outcomes delivered safely, on time, and on budget.

The company is scaling its commercial division and looking for a leader who listens first, earns trust, strengthens the team, and helps build what comes next. They're not looking for someone who shows up on day one with a binder and tries to rewrite the entire playbook. They want someone who is self-aware, commercially sharp, collaborative, and genuinely enjoyable to work with.

If you've been considering Vancouver - or you're already here - and you're ready for a career-defining leadership opportunity with a defined equity path and a real seat at the table, this is worth a conversation.

What You’ll Do
Executive & Operations Leadership
  • Lead the commercial construction division with full accountability for people, project performance, and profitability.
  • Drive executional excellence by establishing consistent processes, clear expectations, and high-performance standards across all projects.
  • Champion health, safety, and environmental protection across all projects and teams.
  • Contribute to the company's strategic plan, advancing objectives around revenue, profitability, skill development, and organizational growth.
  • Develop, coach, and mentor employees across the organization, with specific attention to direct project teams and future leaders.
  • Define key personnel and labour requirements and support the selection of top candidates alongside the People & Culture team.
  • Oversee and manage project disputes and claims of significant value with support from project teams.
  • Lead project close-outs and post-project debriefing sessions, implementing process improvements.
  • Promote communication across all functional areas, with particular focus on the pre-construction to construction handover.
Pre-Construction & Pursuit
  • Partner closely with business development during the pursuit stage and assume executive sponsorship for projects during start-up and closeout.
  • Lead and implement strategies to set up major projects in a way that safeguards success throughout the entire project lifecycle.
  • Consult with project teams on general conditions, construction methodology, and schedules during the tender and pre-construction process.
  • Maintain awareness of marketplace conditions and trends to develop effective bid strategies and maintain competitive advantage.
  • Oversee the transition and handover from pre-construction to construction.
Construction Delivery
  • Provide technical, project, and people leadership to project teams across the commercial portfolio.
  • Oversee scheduling, staffing, and resource allocation to ensure key milestones are met throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Manage all technical, financial, and legal aspects of assigned projects, ensuring alignment with financial and operational goals.
  • Direct the planning and execution of larger projects with a focus on milestone tracking, workforce planning, and efficient use of resources.
  • Maintain and further develop business relationships with key clients and partners.
What You Bring
Experience & Credentials
  • 15-20 years of direct experience in a technical construction leadership role managing multiple projects, stakeholders, and P&L responsibility.
  • Proven experience providing executive-level oversight across commercial and mixed-use construction projects valued at $150M+.
  • Deep understanding of fixed-price and design-build construction delivery models.
  • Strong knowledge of and relationships within the local construction industry and trades.
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and Microsoft Project.
  • Current knowledge of all relevant construction and building codes, standards, and regulations.
Skills & Attributes
  • A builder of teams, not just buildings - someone who thrives on collaboration, inspires confidence, and brings a sharp focus to client satisfaction and operational results.
  • Self-aware, solutions-oriented, and commercially sharp.
  • Collaborative and approachable - genuinely enjoyable to work with.
  • Strong P&L acumen - can confidently walk through financials, protect margins, manage risk, and run a profitable division.
  • Proven track record of staff management, mentorship, and developing future leaders.
  • Excellent interpersonal, team management, and problem-solving skills.
  • Professional and productive in all interactions - maintains composure and earns trust across all levels.
What We Can Offer You
