Qualifications

  • A minimum of five years senior management experience in electricity marketing, customer engagement, renewable energy business development and/or renewable project development.
  • Experience negotiating Power Purchase Agreements is required.
  • Knowledge of lands and resources and self-government agreements in the NWT is considered an asset.

Job description

Director, Business and Community Energy Development

This position is located in Hay River, NT

Reporting to the CFO, and as a member of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) the Director, Business and Community Energy Development is responsible for developing community electricity plans which includes, Integrated Resource Planning, Indigenous government and community electrification engagement with the potential for project development. Is the corporate lead to identify and execute potential business development opportunities and identifies and secures funding for projects and/or programs. The Director Business and Community Energy Development is responsible for leading the consultation, engagement and relationship building with Indigenous governments and communities on a broad range of corporate projects and initiatives. These activities include the negotiation on project agreements for new energy projects, consultation and engagement to build and maintain a strong, respectful and productive relationship with Indigenous governments and communities. As a member of SLT, the incumbent plays a key role in developing and executing corporate goals, financial plans, business plans and strategies to achieve the corporate mandate.

Responsibilities
  • Develops and updates Integrated Resource Plans (IRP) for increased electrification to meet the GNWT’s energy and climate change goals.
  • Develops business partnerships with Indigenous governments and communities for possible renewable energy investment by NT Energy or NTPC.
  • Leads the consultation and engagement and negotiates project agreements with Indigenous governments to secure support for new energy projects. Works with internal resources and external advisors to structure and negotiate investments by Indigenous governments.
  • Supports community leaders and energy stakeholders to understand proven technologies that are applicable to site and regionally specific opportunities.
  • Corporate lead to identify business opportunities for industrial and commercial customers. This includes working with GNWT departments to identify economic and/or social benefits to rate payers and residents of the NWT through mineral mining opportunities, commercial activities, manufacturing operations and residual heat use.
  • Pursues funding opportunities and is the corporate contact with the GNWT to obtain Federal or Territorial funding for NTPC and NT Energy capital and operational projects.
Qualifications
  • Undergraduate Degree in Business, Economics, Science, Engineering or a related field WITH associated post-secondary certification (MBA, CPA, CFA, P.Eng) AND a minimum five years senior management experience in electricity marketing, customer engagement, renewable energy business development and/or renewable project development. This includes experience negotiating Power Purchase Agreements. Equivalencies may be considered.
  • Knowledge of lands and resources and self-government agreements in the NWT, their intent, purpose and implications would be considered an asset.
  • Excellent skills relating to communications, marketing, human relations, negotiations, strategic operational and financial planning, and problem solving.
  • Proven written and oral communication skills to develop and present reports, position papers and proposals.
  • Must be adept at consensus building and developing cooperative environments.
  • Requires a high level of interpersonal communication skills. Must be an excellent motivator in a wide range of circumstances and diverse situations.
  • Requires the ability to handle confrontational situations in the government, corporate and public sectors and to defend the actions and programs of the Corporation.
  • Requires sensitivity to the political, legal, safety and environmental concerns facing the Corporation.
  • Requires the ability to adapt general policy directives into specific tasks, monitors the progress and initiates corrective measures to achieve the desired result.
  • A comprehensive understanding of local, regional, and northern political and social economic conditions and values.
  • Class 5 driver's license is required.
  • Satisfactory criminal record check is required.

Salary for this position ranges from $95.82/hr to $119.78/hr. plus combined location and accommodation allowances of approximately $8,023 per annum. We offer a comprehensive benefits package which includes health and dental benefits, long-term disability, life insurance, paid sick days and a defined benefits pension plan. This position is located in Hay River, NT. Relocation assistance may be provided.
