What is the opportunity?
The GRM Operational Risk Advisory & Oversight (A&O) team is responsible for providing independent and objective oversight of operational risk management (ORM) for the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Group and Group Risk Management (GRM).
The primary purpose for this Director role is to ensure that operational risk profiles for each business unit within CFO and GRM have been established, kept current, and demonstrate fair and accurate representations of the Functions’ operational risk exposure. This role partners closely with the business to facilitate the implementation of the operational risk framework and sound risk management practices across the Functions.
What will you do?
Act as a leader in Operational Risk
- Deliver the vision and execute the ORM plan through a team of ORM professionals (management of peers and indirect reports, both in-person and virtual teams)
- Drive a culture of integrity and behaviors that align to RBC’s Code of Conduct and professional standards.
- Work collaboratively across teams, enabling an engaged workforce who are effective, knowledgeable and adaptable.
Direct the Implementation of RBC’s Operational Risk Management (ORM) program and practices
- Contribute to and execute on the vision, strategy and operating model for operational risk management.
- Direct the implementation of core operational risk management programs and practices to ensure accurate view of Operational Risk Profile
- Support implementation of ORM initiatives (e.g. Internal Control Management Policy, RCSAs and Risk Register),monitor for adherence to requirements while assessing quality of 1LOD outputs and escalating concerns where required.
- Identify trends and direct research into areas of perceived elevated or emerging operational risk and conduct thematic reviews where necessary.
Provide Operational Risk advice and monitor key & emerging risks
- Provide ORM risk mitigation strategies (and /or related area of expertise) and advise senior management and executives in understanding and managing operational risk across multiple domains.
- Champion behaviours that embed a strong risk management culture across 1st & 2nd LOD
- Provide oversight on the design and effectiveness of the internal control environment.
- Actively support 1LOD in establishing operational risk appetite that aligns with their stated strategic objectives.
- Leverage operational risk data and analysis to provide management with insights to support decision-making.
- Conduct Independent reviews to provide a perspective to 1st Line of Defense on emerging risks and trends.
- Deliver 1st Line of Defense insights gained from external sources such as ORX, Industry Events, Industry Best practices, as well as from Comparative Analysis across LOBs and Business Segments to improve their risk management practices.
Enable regulatory change, Operational Risk governance and reporting
- Support Management to respond to information requests by regulators, supervisors, and statutory bodies (as required)
- Identify and develop guidance material designed to support 1st Line of Defense interpretation and implementation of regulatory requirements
- Monitor and analyze the design and operational effectiveness of a platform’s control environment
- Review and opine on assessment of operational Risk and provide oversight and challenge on risk assessments completed by 1st LOD (e.g. IRPs, PARS, RCSAs, etc.)
- Report operational risk-related reporting and insights, and partner with the business to enhance reporting where required, to support executive management to build a perspective on operational risks and emerging trends.
- Develop a story board to provide a profile of operational risk, leveraging risk dashboards, metrics and other information sources.
What do you need to succeed?
Must-have
- 5 years of depth and breadth of risk management experience (1LOD or 2LOD)
- Strong financial control and risk management process knowledge
- Good knowledge of financial industry regulatory requirements and best practices related to risk management practices globally.
- Proficient in risk management methodologies, ideally operational risk management practices
- Experience working in a matrixed environment actively managing a diverse group of
stakeholders across first and second lines of defense. - Proven relationship management skills and demonstrated strong level of engagement with
peers and partners across a broad range of stakeholders, in order to influence and effect
change. - Skilled in building a network and maintaining key relationships across the organization.
- Strong negotiation skills and confidence to challenge others.
Nice to have
- Direct experience in Operational Risk (1LOD or 2LOD), and knowledge of operational risk frameworks and policies
- Understanding of Regulatory Compliance Management practices
- University degree, or designation associated with Risk Management
