Job summary

RailWorks Corporation in Ontario is seeking a Directional Drill Operator to support trenchless construction projects. The role involves pre-trip safety inspections, operating drill and locator equipment, and ensuring compliance with site rules and safety procedures.

You will collaborate with teammates, read construction drawings, and troubleshoot equipment with service technicians as needed. This position requires flexibility for day, evening, and weekend shifts and a clean AZ license.

Qualifications

  • AZ License with clean driving abstract required.
  • Minimum 3+ years in directional drilling.
  • Knowledge of underground utilities and locates.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings.
  • Experience in fast-paced environments with shifting priorities.
  • Experience with Ditch Witch JD10 horizontal bore machines preferred.
  • Good communication skills for team collaboration.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct pre-trip/walk around safety inspections and paperwork.
  • Operate all equipment functions safely and independently.
  • Adhere to policies, regulations and site rules.
  • Work with minimal supervision and communicate with the team.
  • Load/unload equipment; transport tools and materials.
  • Prepare drill fluid based on site conditions.
  • Operate drilling with heads and back reamers to place ducts.
  • Troubleshoot equipment issues with service technicians.
  • Operate drill or locator as required.
  • Perform other duties to meet company objectives.

Job description

Reporting to the Foreman or Supervisor or designate, the Directional Drill operator performs a variety of tasks related to the operation of directional drill and construction equipment.

Primary/Essential Responsibilities and Duties
  • Conduct pre-trip/walk around safety inspections and complete necessary safety paperwork and documentation.
  • Ability to operate all equipment functions independently and safely
  • Adhering to specific policies and regulations
  • Adhering to site specific rules and regulations
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Maintain excellent communication between members of the team and clients
  • Working as a member of the team by assisting other members when required.
  • Load and unload the directional drill equipment in a manner that is secure and damage free
  • Transport associated tools, materials, and/or equipment
  • Prepare the drill fluid based on site conditions prior to bore shot commencing
  • In conjunction with locator, operate the direction drilling using the selected bore heads and back reamers to place ducts.
  • Troubleshoot any equipment issues and relay to service technician for assistance and/or resolution
  • Able to operate drill or locator as required.
  • All other duties assigned to meet Company objectives.
Required Skills and Qualifications
  • AZ License, with clean Driving Abstract, required.
  • 3+ Years of Directional Drilling Experience, preferred.
  • Previous knowledge of Underground Utilities and Locates
  • Ability to read and comprehend construction drawings
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced high change environment while managing multiple interruptions and adjustments of priorities throughout the day.
  • Experience with Ditch Witch JD10 Horizonal Bore Machines, preferred
  • Good Communication skills with ability to work in a team environment
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Standing and walking around the project site
  • Ability to life 50lbs (23kg)
  • Frequent bending, lifting, digging, shoveling and moving of objects on site.
  • Loud noise
  • Field environment and subject to all weather conditions.
  • Working in and around live commuter trains, high voltage, confined space, safety sensitive cabling
  • Day, evening, night and weekend shift work
