Job summary

Michif Child and Family Services is seeking Direct Service Workers for Portage La Prairie, MB. Three casual positions are available to provide in-home and community support to strengthen Metis and Inuit families. Hours vary including days, evenings, overnights, and weekends.

Under supervision, you will perform house duties, document care, and coordinate with social workers to implement goal-oriented interventions. A valid driver’s license and CPR/First Aid are required.

Qualifications

  • CPR and Emergency First Aid required.
  • Access to a reliable vehicle and Manitoba Class 5F license.
  • Understanding Metis Culture and Communities.
  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills.
  • Able to multi-task and prioritize.

Responsibilities

  • Provide basic housekeeping duties, including cooking and meal preparation.
  • Report broken or damaged property and maintenance needs.
  • Follow daily routines and supervision procedures.
  • Monitor television, video, and computer use per age guidelines.
  • Administer medication as directed.
  • Maintain daily documentation including incident reports and logs.
  • Provide transportation and supervision for visits and appointments.
  • Determine and document disciplinary actions and monitor progress.
  • Coordinate with Social Workers and collaterals.

Job description

Michif Child & Family Services (MCFS) Agency is a mandated child and family services agency with the responsibility to administer and manage culturally appropriate community-based child protection and support services for Metis and Inuit people in Manitoba.

DIRECT SERVICE WORKER
3 CASUAL POSITIONS AVAILABLE

Hours of Work: Varied – Days, Evenings, Overnights & Weekends

Classification and Salary: SYCW, $18.77 - $28.89 per hour

Location: Portage La Prairie, MB & surrounding areas

Under the supervision of the Service Supervisor, the Direct Service Worker participates in the development and implementation of a range of goal-oriented interventions to children and/or their families. This position will work to provide in home and community support services to strengthen Metis and Inuit families.

Main areas of Key Responsibilities and Activities
  • Provide basic housekeeping duties, including cooking and meal preparation (breakfast, dinner, supper and snacks).
  • Reporting broken or damaged property, including general maintenance.
  • Ability to follow daily routine duties and procedures, including wake up calls and bed time procedures.
  • Ability to monitor and assess television, video and computer use, according to age appropriate rating.
  • Ability to administer medication as directed.
  • Ability to perform daily documentation, including incident reports, menu planning and revisions (listing of allergies), discharge reports, daily logs, assessment binders, financial logs (household, recreation, allowance and restitution) admissions, including photographs, MAR sheets, fire drill logs.
  • Providing transportation, supervision and support to any supported family visit or scheduled appointment, including completing documentation and providing communication of treatment plan.
  • Ability to determine appropriate disciplinary actions for youth on disciplinary action, documenting and communicating to other staff team members, the reason for discipline and duration of discipline, review and assess youth’s progress after disciplinary action date.
  • Monitor family visits
  • Consult with Social Workers and collaterals to assess and review goals and plans.
  • Other duties as assigned
Education and Experience
  • Current CPR and Emergency First Aid is required
  • Access to a reliable vehicle and possession of a valid Manitoba class 5F driver’s license as travel within the communities is required.
  • Demonstrated understanding of Metis Culture and Communities
  • Grade 12 diploma is an asset
  • Current Non-Violent Crisis Intervention would be an asset
  • Ability to cook
  • Ability to maintain highly sensitive and confidential information
  • Strong interpersonal, administrative, organization and written communication skills.
  • Proven ability to multi task and prioritize
  • Ability to determine and assess potentially dangerous situations
  • Ability to stabilize and provide safely to residents and staff

Prior to commencing employment the successful applicant will be asked to provide satisfactory results of a Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search, proof of $2 million dollar insurance liability, a Child Abuse Registry Check, Prior Contact Check and a Driver’s Abstract upon hire at their own expense. A valid Manitoba driver’s license and the use of a personal vehicle are requisites as travel is required.
