Job summary

SEIU-West seeks a Digital Organizer - External in Saskatoon to strengthen our ability to mobilize members online and translate momentum into offline action. You will build online movements, run campaigns across digital, telephone, text, and door-knocking channels, and collaborate with diverse members and staff to identify workplace issues and plan campaigns.

The temporary, full-time role requires travel across SEIU-West, flexible hours, and a deep commitment to social justice within the labour

Qualifications

  • Bachelor degree in Communications, Marketing, Labour Studies, Political Science or History (or related field).
  • Two years’ experience working in communications in social justice movements or labour movement.
  • Any combination of education and experience that demonstrates capacity to perform duties.

Responsibilities

  • Build online social movements and move people from online to offline engagement.
  • Conduct digital, telephone, text-based, and door-knocking campaigns for the membership.
  • Work with diverse communities and educate member leaders to identify workplace issues.
  • Maintain relationships with members and staff; travel as campaign needs.

Digital Organizer - External

The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) is the largest and fastest growing Union in North America with over 2.1 million members. Our 13,000 members work in healthcare, education, community-based organizations, day care, retirement facilities, municipalities and light-industrial plants across the province.

Department: Organizing (Location: Saskatoon).
FTE: Full Time.
Status: Temporary
Salary information: 80,835.40-93,415.49 (Field Staff 1).

This position reports to the Organizing Director (or designate).

Qualifications
  • A Bachelor degree in Communications, Marketing, Labour Studies, Political Science or History (or related field); and two years’ experience working in communications in social justice movements, ethnocultural associations, Indigenous organizations, or within the broader labour movement; or a sufficient combination of education and experience to complete the duties of the position in an exemplary manner
Experience
  • Experience building, maintaining and upkeeping data systems that include member lists, facility maps and documents related to organizing campaigns
  • Experience running a social media page using platforms like TikTok, Instagram and Facebook for an organization, club, etc.
  • Experience using organizing digital tools such as ActionBuilder, ActionNetwork, CallHub, NationBuilder, etc.
  • Experience working with design tools such as Adobe Creative Cloud (particularly Adobe Express) and Cap Cut
  • Experience in the labour movement and demonstrated commitment to social justice are assets
  • Demonstrated familiarity with labour union politics and history; knowledge of provincial labour legislation is an asset
  • Capacity to work as part of a team under pressure with other department staff on organizing campaigns
  • Demonstrated capacity as a leader
  • Must possess a valid driver’s licence and a reliable vehicle
  • Eligibility to hold a valid passport and travel internationally
Skills

  • Work with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures
  • Maintain working relationships with, and provide support to, members, Internal Organizers and other staff
  • Work with and educate member leaders in identifying workplace issues with a problem-solving focus
  • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Work with union organizing databases/programs like ActionBuilder, ActionNetwork, CallHub, NationBuilder, etc.
  • Strong personal planning and time-management skills

  • Punctual and reliable
  • Able to work long, irregular hours, including weekends and holidays
  • Able to regularly travel throughout SEIU-West’s geographical jurisdiction based on campaign needs
  • Motivated self-starter able to work effectively with a minimum of supervision and as part of a team, as required
  • Able to exercise discretion and independent judgement
  • Able to multitask and organize time efficiently
  • Able to handle difficult situations with tact, composure and dignity
  • Deep understanding of how to build online social movements
  • Willing to engage in training, including from the International Union in the United States, on a regular basis
