Job Description

In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of the Vancouver Island Health Authority (Island Health), patient and staff safety is a priority and a shared responsibility. The continuous improvement of quality and safety is inherent in this position.

The Dietitian-Diabetes Program is part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team, providing nutrition care and support to clients with all types of diabetes, following established policies, standards, and procedures.

This role involves applying advanced clinical knowledge and techniques, such as insulin dose adjustment. The program offers nutrition services including assessment, care planning, intervention, client goal setting, monitoring, counseling, and education. It also includes orientation, guidance, and sharing of knowledge or equipment demonstrations with colleagues, new staff, and students, in line with professional standards and program goals.

The program contributes to regional, provincial, and local diabetes services by developing nutritional practice guidelines, participating in research, and engaging in quality improvement initiatives.

Qualifications
Education, Training, and Experience
  • Current registration with the College of Dietitians of British Columbia (CDBC).
  • Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) Certificate or successful completion within 3 years of hire.
  • Two (2) years of recent, related experience.
  • Or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience, such as insulin dose adjustment competency or completion of the Diabetes Educator Certificate Program from Michener Institute.

  • Teaching: Ability to instruct clients and others individually and in groups, with knowledge of applicable educational principles.
  • Knowledge Integration: Incorporates best practices and current research to inform professional decisions.
  • Communication: Effectively communicates with clients, families, medical staff, and the interdisciplinary team via oral, written, and electronic means. Capable of resolving conflicts effectively.
  • Critical Thinking: Evaluates data from multiple sources to problem-solve and make decisions using a systems approach.
  • Management: Organizes work, sets objectives, prioritizes tasks, manages time and resources, and promotes teamwork.
  • Leadership: Demonstrates innovative planning, policy implementation, and commitment to ongoing professional development.
  • Teamwork: Fosters collaboration and strives for excellence in client care.
  • Equipment: Proficient in computer skills including Meditech, Windows-based programs, data analysis, email, and word processing. Operates relevant equipment as required.
  • Physical Ability: Capable of performing the duties of the position.
