Job description
Overview

Under the direction of the Coordinator or Supervisor – Nutrition & Food Services, Cook 2 or Cook 1, the Dietary Aide is responsible for the completion of assigned tasks in relation to the safe preparation, serving, and distribution of nutritious meals to clients. The incumbent is responsible for serving meals to staff and visitors, performing cashier duties, and following proper sanitation safety guidelines. This is in addition to following established standards, departmental/regional policies and procedures and government regulations and legislation.

The incumbent exercises the appropriate level of initiative and independent judgment in determining work priorities, work methods, and action to be taken on unusual matters. The position functions in a manner that is consistent with the mission, vision and values, and the policies of Southern Health-Santé Sud.

Responsibilities
  • Prepare and distribute nutritious meals safely; serve meals to clients, staff, and visitors.
  • Perform cashier duties and maintain standards of sanitation and hygiene.
  • Adhere to established policies and procedures, including government regulations.
  • Exercise initiative to determine priorities and appropriate work methods; handle unusual matters as needed.
Experience
  • Six (6) months of experience in food handling and/or healthcare food services.
Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)
  • Minimum Grade 10 education.
  • Completion of a Dietary Aide certificate.
  • Current Food Handler Training Certificate Level 1 or equivalent Food Sanitation course, or willingness to obtain within six (6) months of employment.
  • Other suitable combination of education and experience may be considered.
Certification/Licensure/Registration
  • Current Food Handler Training Certificate Level 1 or equivalent Food Sanitation course.
Qualifications and Skills
  • Proficiency in both official languages (English/French) is essential.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, Outlook/Email, and online training.
  • Knowledge of therapeutic and texture-modified diets.
  • Knowledge of sanitary food handling principles and procedures.
  • Knowledge of Electronic Menu Management Information System (EMMIS) where applicable.
  • Demonstrated competency in cash management.
  • Ability to respect and promote a culturally diverse population.
  • Ability to respect confidentiality (paper, electronic, and other formats).
  • Good work and attendance record.
Physical Requirements
  • Demonstrated ability to meet the physical and mental demands of the job.
  • Ability to lift 1–5 kg constantly, 6–11 kg occasionally, and up to 23 kg seldomly.
  • No hazardous or significantly unpleasant conditions.
  • May work evenings and weekends as per work rotation or as necessary.
