Job Summary:

Food and Nutrition Services has a casual opportunity for a Therapeutic Diet Technician, who under the supervision of a Clinical Dietitian will be responsible for interacting with patients regarding food preferences, menu selection, the development of individual dietary plans, ensuring residents’ special or therapeutic diets are addressed, and that dietary choices accommodate chewing and swallowing abilities.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Modify/monitor meals in accordance with diets and changes in health status, as recommended and monitored by the Clinical Dietitian or physician.
  • Conduct audits to ensure accuracy of diet orders, preference lists, and trays. Observe changes in eating habits and bring any changes or concerns to the attention of the Clinical Dietitian.
  • Provide an introduction/overview of the food services system to residents, families, and caregivers.
  • Participate in departmental monthly QA projects and collaborate with departmental quality and service improvement initiatives.

Qualifications include but are not limited to:

  • Graduated from an approved Dietary Technician diploma program, Food & Nutrition Management or recognized equivalent is required.
  • Member of Canadian Society of Nutrition Management (‘CSNM’).
  • Completion of a Food Handler’s certification.
  • Two (2) years related clinical experience in a large health care facility.
  • Previous experience working with a geriatric population would be an asset.
  • Experience in direct care, nutrition screening, diet modification, and patient education.
  • Experience in a computerized diet office environment.
  • Intermediate computer skills and the ability to work with Microsoft Office software.
  • Knowledge of Computrition systems.
  • Knowledge of Meditech software would be an asset.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Good organizational and analytical skills.
  • Effective interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate with geriatric patients who may have varying stages of dementia.
