Job summary

Canadian Pacific Railway is seeking a Diesel Service Attendant to move, fuel, clean, test and perform basic repairs on locomotives in a fast, safety‑driven environment. You will work both independently and as part of a team, gaining hands‑on locomotive maintenance experience and advancing through the apprenticeship program.

Ideal candidates are mechanically inclined, safety focused and ready for outdoor work in all weather.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Must be able to pass written examinations and read safety instructions.
• Demonstrated commitment to safety and ability to work independently and in a team.

Responsibilities

• Refuel and sand locomotives and stock cab amenities for crew comfort.
• Inspect and perform basic repairs on locomotives, fuel tanks, and cab equipment.
• Assess parts for reuse or replacement to support cost-effective maintenance.
• Clean and service locomotive cabs, including walls, floors, windows, and toilets, for safety and hygiene.
• Test cab electrical systems and safety devices; set up cab brakes as required; complete crew-to-crew documentation.
• Perform additional duties per collective agreement.

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

Diesel Service Attendants are responsible for moving, fueling, cleaning, testing, and performing basic repairs on locomotives in a fast ‑ paced, safety ‑ focused environment. This role requires strict adherence to regulatory and safety standards while working both independently and as part of a team.

The ideal candidate is mechanically inclined, safety conscious, and enjoys hands ‑ on work in an outdoor setting across varying weather conditions. This position provides foundational experience with locomotive maintenance and serves as a strong entry point into CPKC’s Locomotive Diesel Mechanic Apprenticeship Program, offering long ‑ term career growth and technical development.

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:

• Refuel and sand locomotives while ensuring cab amenities are stocked for crew comfort
• Inspect and perform basic repairs on locomotives, fuel tanks, and cab equipment to maintain operational reliability
• Assess parts for reuse or replacement, supporting cost-effective maintenance practices.
• Clean and service locomotive cabs, including walls, floors, windows, and toilets, to uphold safety and hygiene standards
• Test cab electrical systems and safety devices, set up cab brakes per operational requirements, and complete all crew-to-crew documentation
• Perform additional duties as outlined in the collective agreement

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

• High school diploma or general equivalency
• Valid driver’s license
• Minimum 1 year experience working around heavy equipment
• Available to work all types of shifts, including nights, weekends and holidays in all weather conditions
• Ability to pass the required written examinations, read and understand safety instructions, rules, regulations and other written or printed material in English
• Proven dedication to safety and ability to complete work within guidelines/rules
