Job summary

CPKC in Winnipeg, MB is seeking Diesel Service Attendants to move, fuel, clean, test, and perform basic repairs on locomotives in a safety‑minded setting. This role provides foundational experience and a path into the Locomotive Diesel Mechanic Apprenticeship Program, with long‑term growth and technical development.

The ideal candidate will be mechanically inclined, safety‑conscious, and able to work outdoors in varying weather, shifts including nights and holidays, with a valid driver’s license

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Minimum 1 year experience around heavy equipment.
• Commercial driver’s license preferred.
• Ability to work nights, weekends and holidays in all weather conditions.
• Must read and understand safety instructions in English.
• Proven dedication to safety and ability to follow guidelines.

Responsibilities

• Refuel and sand locomotives while stocking cab amenities for crew comfort.
• Inspect and perform basic repairs on locomotives, fuel tanks, and cab equipment.
• Assess parts for reuse or replacement to support maintenance.
• Clean and service locomotive cabs, including walls, floors, windows, and toilets.
• Test cab electrical systems and safety devices, set up cab brakes, and complete crew documentation.
• Perform additional duties as outlined in the collective agreement.

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

Diesel Service Attendants are responsible for moving, fueling, cleaning, testing, and performing basic repairs on locomotives in a fast‑paced, safety‑focused environment. This role requires strict adherence to regulatory and safety standards while working both independently and as part of a team.

The ideal candidate is mechanically inclined, safety conscious, and enjoys hands‑on work in an outdoor setting across varying weather conditions. This position provides foundational experience with locomotive maintenance and serves as a strong entry point into CPKC’s Locomotive Diesel Mechanic Apprenticeship Program, offering long‑term career growth and technical development.

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES

• Refuel and sand locomotives while ensuring cab amenities are stocked for crew comfort
• Inspect and perform basic repairs on locomotives, fuel tanks, and cab equipment to maintain operational reliability
• Assess parts for reuse or replacement, supporting cost-effective maintenance practices.
• Clean and service locomotive cabs, including walls, floors, windows, and toilets, to uphold safety and hygiene standards
• Test cab electrical systems and safety devices, set up cab brakes per operational requirements, and complete all crew-to-crew documentation
• Perform additional duties as outlined in the collective agreement

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

• High school diploma or general equivalency
• Valid driver’s license
• Minimum 1 year experience working around heavy equipment
• Commercial driver’s license preferred
• Available to work all types of shifts, including nights, weekends and holidays in all weather conditions
• Ability to pass the required written examinations, read and understand safety instructions, rules, regulations and other written or printed material in English
• Proven dedication to safety and ability to complete work within guidelines/rules

This is a safety sensitive position and a successful pre‑employment medical assessment including physical, vision, hearing, and a negative company drug test is required. Post hire qualification drug testing may also be required.
