Job Summary

The Heavy-Duty Mechanic (HDM) is responsible for performing inspections, major and minor repairs, overhauls, and servicing on all types of locomotives.

Working Conditions & Major Responsibilities
  1. Ability to work irregular shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays, and occasional overtime.
  2. Shop environment.
  3. Occasional travel.
  4. Perform major and minor repairs, overhauls, and servicing on all types of locomotives.
  5. Inspect, service, and maintain locomotives, in accordance with federal and company regulations, including changing oil or repairing, replacing, cleaning, and adjusting parts.
  6. Diagnose diesel engine malfunctions and make required repairs.
  7. Assemble and start engines.
  8. Use electric and oxy-acetylene welding equipment, lubrication equipment, and other vehicle repair tools and operate them safely.
  9. Prepare inspection, maintenance, and work reports, recording details as per procedures.
  10. Operate locomotives on shop tracks and test locomotives after repair.
Requirements & Assets
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Diesel mechanic experience and/or diploma.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to use measuring devices and understand visual displays.
  • Basic technical knowledge of diesel mechanics.
  • Good hand-eye coordination.
  • Commitment to quality, safety, and customer satisfaction.
  • Frequent lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs.
  • Valid commercial driver’s license for the equipment operated.
  • Ability to certify company equipment per provincial standards.
  • Experience troubleshooting hydraulic and electronic systems.
  • Welding skills.

Paid Training & Candidate Process

Successful candidates will receive on-the-job training, including a possible 4-year apprenticeship, and attend courses at your work location. Training covers locomotive components, control systems, brakes, and more. Completion is essential for future duties.

  • Medical assessment, criminal background check, and offer letter.
  • Training structure: 3 weeks at CN campus, 2+ weeks in shop, 3 weeks at CN campus.
