The Diagnostic Sonographer I position at Alberta Children’s Hospital operates in the specialized, highly technical environment of Ultrasound. The Sonographer I, under limited supervision, assesses patients, analyzes and interprets diagnostic data, and provides information to the Radiologist to assist in diagnosis, clinical intervention, and patient management. Responsibilities include performing procedures such as general and pediatric vascular Ultrasound, as well as specialized imaging like Bowel, Hip, Spine, Brain, and Intussusception diagnosing as required. These services are performed effectively, efficiently, and safely. As a member of the Diagnostic Imaging team, this position requires working all shifts and on-call as assigned.
As a Diagnostic Sonographer I, you will perform a variety of standardized and complex ultrasound services for diagnosing and tracking disease and pathology. Your responsibilities include preparing patients, reviewing history, explaining procedures, obtaining diagnostic-quality images, and taking initial actions on abnormal findings. You will assist with diagnosis, clinical intervention, and patient management while ensuring high standards of patient care and safety. The role may also involve assisting Radiologists, Cardiologists, Perinatologists, and other medical staff with special procedures.
Completion of an extended diploma from an accredited ultrasound program or certification in Diagnostic Sonography from an accredited program. Active or eligible for registration with Sonography Canada and/or Alberta College of Medical Diagnostic & Therapeutic Technologists (ACMDTT) and/or American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support Healthcare Provider (BCLS-HCP).
Valid membership from Sonography Canada and/or ARDMS is required. Ability to work independently at times and take remote direction from a Radiologist.
Recent Pediatric Ultrasound experience in a tertiary hospital setting is preferred. Excellent English verbal and written communication skills, interpersonal, problem-solving, and decision-making skills are essential. Ability to work independently or as part of a multidisciplinary team in a demanding, dynamic environment.
