TeamBuilder Consulting is currently supporting a client in hiring a couple of key founding engineers for their startup in downtown Ottawa.

The first is a highly skilled DevOps Engineer with Full Stack Engineering expertise , particularly focused on backend systems. In this hands-on, Individual Contributor (IC) role, you’ll be the point for operations and systems, building, scaling, and supporting all aspects of the cloud infrastructure across OpenAI, GCP, Postgres, and more. You should be ready to jump in when things go wrong and support systems even outside of business hours.

The ideal candidate will be a problem solver with a passion for building resilient and scalable systems. You should thrive in a dynamic environment, with a willingness to wear many hats and drive multiple projects to completion.

Key Responsibilities :

• Lead the development, scaling, and maintenance of our cloud infrastructure (OpenAI, GCP, Postgres, etc.).
• Build and maintain scalable backend systems with a focus on performance, security, and reliability.
• Support systems in production, ensuring uptime and dealing with outages as necessary (off-hours support required).
• Design, implement, and maintain APIs that are secure, scalable, and optimized for performance.
• Collaborate with other engineers to build responsive, high-performance user interfaces (front-end focus in React).
• Own the full stack, with a preference for backend-heavy contributions (Node.js, TypeScript, etc.).
• Work with containerization, CI / CD pipelines, automated testing, and cloud-based deployment workflows.
• Optimize databases, ensuring efficient performance and scalability (SQL / NoSQL).
• Leverage cloud services like GCP, Cloud Run, BigQuery, and CloudSQL for optimal infrastructure management.
• Help ensure that best practices for security, data protection, and system stability are always followed.
• Iterate quickly and deliver software at speed without compromising quality.
• Actively contribute to continuous improvement of our engineering processes.

Skills and Qualifications :

10 plus years experience.

Recent hands-on experience : Strong individual contributor background, ideally with recent experience in DevOps and Full Stack engineering (not a managerial role).

Frontend : Proficiency in React (Next.js is a bonus).

Backend : Expertise in backend programming (Node.js, TypeScript) with a focus on building scalable and efficient systems.

API Development : Solid experience in designing and developing RESTful and / or GraphQL APIs, ensuring security and scalability.

Database Expertise : Strong skills in both SQL (Postgres) and NoSQL databases, with experience in scaling and performance tuning.

Cloud Expertise : Experience with cloud infrastructure, especially with Google Cloud Platform (GCP) services (Cloud Run, BigQuery, CloudSQL).

CI / CD & Automation : Familiarity with containerization, CI / CD practices, and automated testing in cloud environments.

Security Practices : Deep understanding of backend security best practices and data protection.

Scalability : Solid experience with distributed systems and cloud-based architectures, particularly with microservices or serverless frameworks.

Speed : Ability to ship quickly and iterate on ideas and solutions.

Bonus Skills & Experience (Big Plus) :

AI Experience : 1-2 years of experience working with LLMs (Large Language Models) or AI technologies, ideally in production environments (e.g., retrieval-augmented generation, LangGraph, Crew AI, etc.).

Advanced Prompt Engineering and advanced strategies such as Chain of Thought, Reflection, or Multi-Agent systems.

Mobile / Other Platforms : Experience beyond web development, such as mobile apps, Chrome Extensions, or phone-calling APIs.

Cloud Expertise : Advanced knowledge of GCP services like BigQuery, Cloud Run, and CloudSQL.

Founding / Startup Experience : Previous experience working in a startup environment or founding your own company.

Side Projects : Demonstrated passion through side projects or open-source contributions, showing the ability to build and ship your own tech.
