Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct care and support to individuals with acquired brain injury, neurobehavioural challenges, and spinal cord injuries.
  • Assist with activities of daily living, mobility, transfers, nutrition, and participation in therapeutic activities.
  • Observe, document, and communicate changes in client status to the interdisciplinary team.
  • Collect behavioural data and provide feedback to support assessment, planning and evaluation of care.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of individualized behaviour care plans.

Salary Range: $33.14 - $36.62 /hour

The inpatient acquired brain injury and spinal cord injury program is a 30-bed unit that provides intensive rehabilitation services for individuals to regain and maintain an optimal level of physical, cognitive, behavioural and psychosocial independence.

Using the principles of client-centered care within an interdisciplinary rehabilitation team, the Developmental Service Worker (DSW) provides direct care and support to individuals with acquired brain injury, neurobehavioural acquired brain injury (with significant behavioural challenges), and spinal cord injury. The DSW assists clients with activities of daily living, including personal care, mobility, transfers, nutrition, and participation in therapeutic and recreational activities, while promoting independence, dignity, and quality of life.

Utilizing a behavioural support model, the DSW works collaboratively with the interdisciplinary team to support rehabilitation goals and implement individualized behaviour care plans. The DSW supports clients who may present with complex behavioural, cognitive, emotional, and psychosocial challenges, and utilizes evidence-informed strategies to promote positive outcomes. The DSW is responsible for observing, documenting, and communicating changes in client status, collecting behavioural data, and providing feedback to the interdisciplinary team to support ongoing assessment, treatment planning, and evaluation of care.

Essential Qualifications
  • Developmental Service Worker Diploma
  • Must be capable of establishing positive interpersonal relationships and able to work as an effective team member
  • Ability to work collaboratively within an inter-professional team as well as the ability to function independently with clients with a predictable outcome
  • Demonstrate effective communication and interpersonal skills
  • The ability to form a working therapeutic relationship with those we serve
  • Demonstrate effective written documentation skills
  • Demonstrate flexibility and strong organizational skills
  • The ability to recognize the cause and meaning of abnormal behaviour indicative of a significant emotional and or psychiatric change and respond therapeutically
  • Ability to apply effective body mechanics and meet the physical demands of the position
  • Working knowledge of the principals of applied behavioural analysis
  • Knowledge of a Safety Culture in a Health Care Setting in compliance with the OHSA
Preferred Qualifications
  • Proficiency in French would be an asset
  • 2 years prior experience working with individuals with challenging behavioural and/or mental health issues
  • 2 years prior experience working with individuals with an acquired brain injury
  • Crisis Intervention and Prevention training from Safe Management Group
  • Valid First Aid Certificate
