Developmental Intern - Engineering

Job summary

NWMO is seeking two enthusiastic student interns to join our Engineering department in Toronto, to contribute to a large, long-term national environmental infrastructure project.

The 16-month term runs May 3, 2027 to August 25, 2028. You will assist in engineering reports and drawings, review designs, input data into configuration management software, conduct literature research, create illustrations, and help with procurement and project coordination. Training and guidance are provided.

Qualifications

• Enrolled in the third or fourth year of a bachelor’s degree program in engineering or science.
• Ability to draft and edit technical reports and documents.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills for technical reporting.
• Knowledge of MS Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Acrobat).
• Experience with CAD modeling using Solidworks and with finite element tools (ANSYS/LS-DYNA) is a plus.
• Must be eligible to work in Canada and able to meet security clearance requirements.

Responsibilities

• Assist in developing engineering reports, drawings and documents.
• Review and quality-check engineering designs, calculations and drawings.
• Input technical reports and drawings into configuration management software for QA.
• Conduct literature research and prepare study reports.
• Create technical illustrations and presentations using MS Office and other software.
• Perform vendor and market searches for engineering services or products.

Founded in 2002, the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) is a not-for-profit organization tasked with the safe, long-term management of Canada’s intermediate- and high-level radioactive waste, in a manner that protects people and the environment for generations to come.

The NWMO has been guided for more than 20 years by a dedicated team of world-class scientists, engineers and Indigenous Knowledge Holders who are developing innovative and collaborative solutions for nuclear waste management. In 2024, the NWMO selected Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation and the Township of Ignace as the hosts for the site for a deep geological repository for used nuclear fuel.

This decision means our office and staff will, in the future, be relocating to Ignace, Ont., and the deep geological repository will be situated in the area near Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation and the Township of Ignace. Infrastructure planning and development are underway to support this transition and ensure that both the community and our employees are well served and supported, now and in the future.

Student Internship - Engineering

Two (2) Positions Available

Employment Period: 16-month Term from May 3, 2027 – August 25, 2028

Position Location:– Toronto, Ontario

Job Summary

We are currently seeking two enthusiastic student interns to join our Engineering department and be a part of implementing a large, long-term national environmental infrastructure project that will last multiple generations.

• Assist in the development of engineering reports, drawings and documents.
• Review and quality check the engineering design, calculations and technical reports and drawings prepared by other engineering staff.
• Assist in inputting technical reports and drawings into configuration management software to ensure quality assurance.
• Conduct literature research on specific technical topics and prepare the study reports.
• Assist in the development of technical illustrations and presentations using MS Office and other software.
• Conduct vendor and market search for specific engineering services or products.
• Assist in the preparation of engineering procurement documents.
• Assist in managing the projects, arranging the meetings and providing meeting notes.

The students will be given tasks based on business need and their knowledge/skill level. Training and guidance will be provided to the student regarding the NWMO procedures and assigned tasks.Occasional travel to NWMO’s local facility or vendor sites may be required. (NWMO covers required travel expenses)

• Currently enrolled in the third or fourth year of a bachelor’s degree program of engineering or Science.
• Ability to draft and edit engineering documents and reports of a technical nature.
• Good oral and written communication skills and excellent writing skills in providing technical reports
• Knowledge of office applications (i.e., MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, Acrobat Professional, etc.) is required.
• Experience in CAD modeling using Solidworks (or similar software packages) and technical drawing preparation would be an asset.
• Knowledge in the finite element method and experience in ANSYS and LS-DYNA (or similar software packages) would be an asset.
• Must be eligible to work in Canada and must be able to meet security clearance requirements.

Eligibility

Students must be returning full-time to their program at their university following the completion of their work term or be full-time students requiring the work term/ internship/ co-op placement to graduate.

Students must be eligible to work in Canada for 35 hours a week and meet the security clearance requirements.

Students must be available to work full-time, 35 hours per week, 7 hours per day, during regular business hours.
