Job description

Join to apply for the Development Writer role at United Way Greater Toronto

We wake up to a different alarm.

The issues impacting our communities here in the GTA keep us awake at night. But it’s also what gets us up each day, determined to fight local poverty and its interconnected challenges, and to make this region everything it can be for everyone who calls it home. We believe in the power of community, of people coming together, doing what it takes to build and transform neighbourhoods where everyone can thrive. Any Way We Can.

How you will make a difference:

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Fundable Opportunities and Impact, the Development Writer will create and enhance donor-centered communications tools to support UWGT’s fundraising efforts. These include customized funding proposals and impact reports for individuals, corporations, and other significant donors, as well as fundraising resources that motivate existing donors and engage new ones.

  • Develop cultivation and stewardship materials supporting UWGT’s mission priorities, including funding proposals, applications, and impact reports for major donors, foundations, and corporate partners.
  • Collaborate across departments to create proposal and stewardship work plans for excellent donor experiences.
  • Create resources and materials to support fundraisers, including gift proposals, report templates, and matching gift reports, while writing persuasive collateral tailored to donor interests.
  • Complete grant applications and stewardship collateral and reports for donors.
  • Work with the Marketing team to produce broad-based stewardship collateral.
  • Edit collateral content from external writers and internal staff.
  • Liaise with staff across the organization to support stewardship activities, including fundraising, finance, community investment, operations, and strategy.
  • Review program monitoring, reporting, and evaluation practices and apply these to donor solicitations and stewardship.
  • Maintain an accessible online repository of past proposals, impact reports, and other donor communications.
  • Oversee and update the proposal and report tracker to ensure timely delivery.
  • Support the Marketing and Communications teams and other departments through leading and contributing to projects as needed.

What you bring to the role:

  • 3 to 5 years of experience in grant and proposal writing, marketing, fundraising, or related fields.
  • Strong initiative, problem-solving, and project management skills.
  • Commitment to supporting UWGT’s Reconciliation and Equity Action Plan, translating anti-oppressive and anti-racist principles into action.
  • Collaborative approach to building internal and external relationships.
  • Excellent communication skills for external audiences unfamiliar with social services.
  • Impeccable organizational and time management skills with keen attention to detail.
  • Design skills with experience in InDesign, PowerPoint, and Canva are assets.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work inclusively with diverse groups.
  • Flexibility to work outside normal hours if required.

Being part of our team:

  • Competitive compensation, including salary, benefits, pension, life insurance, disability benefits, and paid time off.
  • Hybrid work environment and a focus on work-life balance.
  • Work with the GTA’s top philanthropic leaders.

Please apply by May 16, 2025. The salary range will be shared with shortlisted candidates. We accommodate applicants with disabilities during the recruitment process. Internal candidates are encouraged to inform their managers of their application.
