Job summary

Commissionaires Manitoba is seeking a Brandon Police Service Detention Guard to safeguard arrestees and their property, monitor behavior, document activities, and respond to emergencies. The role emphasizes confidentiality and professional conduct within the detention setting.

The position requires basic English proficiency and offers part-time hours with a four-week rotation and twelve-hour shifts (weekends); on-the-job training is provided and compliance with security checks is required.

Qualifications

• Canadian resident for a minimum of 5 years.
• Criminal record and Child Abuse registry checks required; additional security checks may be conducted.
• Good initiative and ability to work with minimal supervision and as part of a team.
• Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to set priorities.
• Effective interpersonal skills.
• Experience or credentials in law enforcement and/or supervisory experience is an asset.
• Demonstrated ability to read, write and speak in English.
• Able to function effectively under stress.

Responsibilities

• Be responsible for the safety, security, and well-being of each arrestee held in custody and their property.
• Assist with monitoring arrestees when they are out of the cell.
• Issue mattresses and blankets to arrestees.
• Maintain a shift log of all detention guard activities.
• Learn established emergency procedures and respond appropriately to emergency/life threatening situations.
• Maintain absolute confidentiality.
• Maintain electronic records of the admission, activities, wellness checks, transfers, and the release process of each arrestee.
• As required, assist Brandon Police Service members to search arrestees.
• Conduct metal detector searches of all arrestees.
• Perform physical wellness checks of each arrestee every 15-minutes.
• Maintain awareness of arrestees’ activities using CCTV and monitor interior/exterior areas.
• Follow checklists and job aids; interact with arrestees in a respectful and dignified manner.
• Heat and dispense prepared meals to prisoners.
• Conduct searches of cells prior to occupation and sanitize when vacated.
• Restrict access to the detention section to authorized persons only.

As a Brandon Police Service Detention Guard, the successful candidate will:

• Be responsible for the safety, security, and well-being of each arrestee held in custody and their property. Report all irregularities and concerns, such as injuries, illness, self harm, or property damage.
• Assists with monitoring arrestees when they are out of the cell.
• Issue mattresses and blankets to arrestees.
• Launder used blankets and other items, as required.
• Maintain a shift log of all detention guard activities.
• Ability to learn established emergency procedures and respond appropriately to emergency/life threatening situations.
• Must maintain absolute confidentiality.
• May be required to provide evidence in court or at an inquest.

• Maintain electronic records of the admission, activities, wellness checks, transfers, and the release process of each arrestee.
• As required, assist Brandon Police Service members to search arrestees.
• Conduct metal detector searches of all arrestees.
• Perform physical wellness checks of each arrestee every 15-minutes (more frequently for arrestees identified as high risk).
• Maintain awareness of arrestees? activities by using a closed-circuit television (CCTV) system, along with monitoring the interior and exterior of the detention section.
• Follow authorized checklists and job aids necessary to administer and execute detention guard tasks. Conducts interactions with all arrestees in a respectful and dignified manner.
• Heats and dispenses prepared processed meals to prisoners.
• Conduct searches of cells prior to occupation and sanitize when they are vacated to ensure they are ready for the next arrestee.
• Restrict access to the detention section to authorized persons only.

Qualifications:

• Canadian resident for a minimum of 5 years.
• Possess current Criminal record and Child Abuse registry checks, additional security checks may be conducted by the Brandon Police Service.
• Good initiative, able to work with minimal supervision and as a member of a team.
• Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to set priorities.
