Job summary

Commissionaires BC is seeking casual on-call detention guards to work at the RCMP detachment in Bella Coola. On-Call shifts cover days, evenings and overnights, with pay at $22/hr. Detention Guards monitor custody safety and perform related duties, living within a 60-minute drive of the detachment.

Responsibilities include prisoner monitoring, searches, meal organization, logbook maintenance, and ensuring cellblock security. Training, WHMIS, and RCMP clearance are part of the process.

Qualifications

• Must be 19 years or older.
• Valid First Aid certificate or willingness to complete.
• Able to obtain RCMP reliability clearance (4–6 months).
• Clear reading, writing and speaking English.
• Ability to move and lift up to 20 kg; climb stairs; stay calm under stress.
• Willingness to undergo detention guard training including WHMIS.

Responsibilities

• Observe prisoners frequently and monitor CCTV.
• Assist RCMP in prisoner searches under direction.
• Organize meals and maintain a prisoner activity logbook.
• Maintain cell cleanliness; arrange janitorial help when needed.
• Search cells before occupation and on vacating; report damage.
• Keep cellblock doors locked and secure personal effects.
• Monitor fire safety and know fire orders.
• Handle laundry items and dispense approved medications under supervision.
• Perform other duties as required by the detachment.

Payrate:

$22/hr

Position Summary:

Under the direction of the RCMP Member responsible for Cell Block Operations, Detention Guards are primarily responsible for monitoring the safety and well-being of persons in custody as well as performing additional duties as required. You must live withing a 60 minutes drive of the detachment.

Duties And Responsibilities:

• Observe and check prisoners frequently and irregularly, including the use of CCTV
• Assist RCMP members in prisoner searches, under direction
• Organize meals, record prisoner activity, and maintain a prisoner activity logbook
• Maintain cleanliness and tidiness of cells when vacated or arrange janitor assistance
• Conduct search of cells prior to occupation and when cells are vacated, reporting any damage
• Maintain cellblock security by ensuring cell doors are always locked
• Ensure all personal effects removed from prisoners are properly secured
• Monitor fire safety and be fully conversant with fire orders
• Handle and dispense laundry items
• Dispense approved prescription medications to persons in custody, under supervision
• Perform other duties required by the detachment

Qualifications – Knowledge, Skills And Abilities:

• Must be 19years and older
• Valid Basic First Aid Certificate (Occupational First Aid level 1or equivalent) or willingness to complete the course prior to being hired
• Able to obtain RCMP Reliability Clearance (RCMP Clearance can take 4 – 6 months to obtain)
• Demonstrated ability to read, write and speak in English
• Vision: Visual standards are RCMP-V4 (eyeglasses permitted)
• Mobility Standards: Able to use both hands, occasionally manipulate/lift up to 20 kilograms, bend at the waist and climb stairs without restrictions or the use of assistance devices
• Ability to remain in control under stressful conditions and work independently
• Ability to be discrete and work effectively with other people
• Willingness to undergo detention guard training as required, including Workplace Hazardous Material Information System (WHMIS) training and refresher on a semi-annual basis
