Qualifications

Design Technologist


Overview
This is technical engineering work at the sub-professional level involved in performing specialized design tasks, carrying out technical investigations, and supervising design programs relative to a variety of projects. The work includes the administration and project management of budgeted projects from preparation of the required design through to completion of the construction phase, and may involve the supervision of work that is performed.

Examples of key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Administration and project management of budgeted projects from preparation of the required design through to completion of the construction phase
  • Design and preparation of detailed construction drawings and specifications for a variety of City services such as roads, drainage, sanitary, water, street lighting and landscaping works.
  • Supervision of one or more technical staff engaged in the design of specific projects.
  • Direct, review, and approve design proposals and specifications prepared by outside consultants.
  • Liaise with developers, consultants, contractors, utility companies, government agencies, suppliers and manufactures.
  • Order materials, monitor and sign off utility company invoices.
  • Project manage annual street light projects and re-lamping.
  • Required to oversee, monitor and provide direction to others; provide input into performance evaluations as required.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of policies and procedures associated with Engineering standards.
  • Knowledge of municipal engineering design principles, practices and methods as they relate to the preparation of plans and specifications, contract documents, tenders, quotations and related matters
  • Knowledge of drafting techniques and procedures.
  • Knowledge of street lighting design.
  • Knowledge of construction methods, standards, materials and of budgeting, project scheduling and standard costing procedures.
  • Knowledge of software required to perform the duties of the position including AutoCAD/Civil 3D, Lighting Software Programs, Basic AC Power Systems, MS Word, Excel, GIS, MS Project, PeopleSoft, IPS,and REDMS or a similar records management system.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with internal and external customers.
  • Ability to plan, assign and supervise the work of one or more technical staff.
  • Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, contracts and related material and to provide direction, information and assistance to drafting, surveying and engineering inspectional staff.
  • Ability to collect, analyze and synthesize technical, statistical, costing and related data and information.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain a variety of records and reports related to the work.
  • Ability to work under a great deal of independence of action in the technical aspects of the role.


Qualifications and Experience:
Completion of Grade 12 plus Diploma of Engineering /Engineering Technology with preference for Civil Engineering, plus a minimum of 2 years related experience in municipal civil engineering design. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of BC (ASTTBC) Certified Technologist is required.Registration with the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA), preferred.Valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence for the Province of British Columbia.

Working Conditions:
Duties are mostly performed in an office environment. This position is required to drive to and from work sites as well as perform fieldwork and inspections. This is done around heavy equip, vehicle traffic, AC power systems, utility excavations, dikes, canals.
