With manufacturing facilities in Toronto Ontario, Maxxit specializes in design assist, project management, and fabrication of innovative interior and exterior architectural solutions.

ABOUT THIS OPPORTUNITY

We are seeking a Design Manager - Retail Division with a strong background in millwork + retail furniture design (mainly QSR (Quick Serve Restaurant) – Front of House) to lead our in-house design team and concurrently actively work on drawings. This role will oversee the end-to-end design process from concept development through to production-ready drawings, ensuring innovative, functional, and manufacturable solutions that align with client needs and brand standards.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Lead, mentor, and manage a small design team including industrial designers, CAD technicians, and junior detailers.
  • Manage workflow, project timelines, and priorities across multiple design initiatives.
  • Manage your own portfolio of projects concurrently with leading the team.
  • Conduct design reviews and provide constructive feedback to uphold design and fabrication quality.
  • Oversee the development of custom and standard product designs for retail environments (fixtures, displays, furniture).
  • Translate client briefs and architectural drawings into creative, cost-effective solutions.
  • Ensure all designs meet structural, material, and fabrication requirements, especially for metal, wood, and mixed-material assemblies.
  • Liaise with sales, production and project management to ensure alignment from concept to build.
  • Participate in client meetings to gather design requirements, present concepts, and resolve design issues.
  • Work closely with shop floor and fabricators to validate prototypes and adjust designs as needed.
  • Oversee preparation of detailed submittal drawings, renderings, and production drawings using software such as SolidWorks and AutoCAD
  • Maintain drawing standards, design libraries, and material databases.
  • Approve final drawings for production release.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Diploma or Degree in Industrial Design, Furniture Design, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.
  • 5+ years’ experience in furniture or architectural metal fabrication design, with at least 3 years in a leadership role.
  • Expert proficiency in CAD software (SolidWorks, AutoCAD).
  • Ability to use Bluebeam, read blueprints and interpret drawings.
  • Strong understanding of fabrication processes : metal (i.e. laser cutting, punching, welding, powder coating), wood + millwork (i.e. cutting, joining, finishing), upholstery (i.e. cutting, stitching, stretching), glass, quartz surfacing, etc..
  • Strong understanding of quality / robust furniture design.
  • Experience working with QSR furniture design is strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of materials sourcing and cost optimization.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, aesthetic sensibility, and attention to detail.
  • Strong communication, organization, and project management skills.
  • Thrives in a fast-paced environment with the ability to change quickly.
