Temporary, Full-time Co-op Position, Fall term 2025

St. Michaels University School (SMUS) is seeking a Design Laboratory Technician Co-op student to join our Education, Technology and Design department. Reporting to the Director of Education Technology and Design, this position is responsible for maintaining and supporting the operation of the Senior School Design Lab. The role includes ensuring all equipment is in good working order, accessible for student use, and providing technical assistance and troubleshooting as needed.

Work Schedule:

Department hours are from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday to Friday. Some flexibility may be available for the right candidate.

This posting is for the September – December 2025 Co-op term.

The successful candidate will have the following skills, background, and interests:

  • Assist and train students and teachers in using design lab and makerspace technology, including 3D printers, laser cutters, circuitry, robotics, and related software for creative projects.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot equipment, ensuring all devices are functional and safe.
  • Support faculty in integrating technology into the curriculum by providing technical expertise and managing software and material resources.
  • Monitor and improve lab safety protocols; maintain a clean and organized lab space.
  • Develop and manage scheduling systems for lab resources and activities.
  • Handle inventory control, procurement, and maintenance of lab equipment and materials.
  • Create an operations manual for future co-op students.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma; working towards a degree/diploma in Engineering, Machinist, or related design and fabrication fields.
  • Minimum of one year of experience in an educational or technical support role.
  • Strong understanding of design and engineering principles, especially in educational settings.
  • Skilled in operating, maintaining, and minor repairs of technical and computer equipment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to support high school students.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently and adapt to educational needs.
  • Effective communication skills with teachers, students, staff, suppliers, and service providers, both verbal and written.
  • Physical ability to carry out duties, including lifting at least 50 lbs.

Hourly Range: $26.58 – $31.27

Criminal Record Check: Must pass and maintain a clear Solicitor General criminal record check for working with children.
