Job summary

NP Aerospace is hiring a Design Engineer in London, Ontario, with on-site duties and potential travel to the UK and USA. The role focuses on developing advanced protective products for military and law enforcement clients, from concept through production.

You will work with 3D CAD (CREO) and PLM tools to deliver robust designs that meet cost and schedule targets. The ideal candidate has 5+ years of design experience, strong GD&T skills, and the ability to obtain security clearances.

Qualifications

• Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
• 5+ years design experience in a similar environment.
• Strong CAD experience with 3D solids modeling.

Responsibilities

• Develop subsystems for military vehicle platforms with manufacturability in mind.
• Create concepts and CAD models, specify materials and processes.
• Collaborate with production and quality teams for corrective actions.
• Support design verification, prototyping, and production readiness.
• Assist in design change control and documentation.

In this role, you’ll contribute to the development of cutting-edge protection systems used by Canada’s Military and Law Enforcement personnel. From ballistic body armour plates, shields, and helmets to ballistic and blast protection systems for vehicles, your work will directly support those who protect and serve our country.

What you'll be doing

• Development of military vehicle sub- system s that, in parallel, satisfy the needs of efficient and effective manufacture / assembly and ongoing supportability, while not compromising in terms of robustness and reliability
• Generating design concepts for new and next generation products, including, CAD, Material selection, defining processing parameters, tooling, and drafting to the department’s standards and procedures.
• I nteract with production and quality teams to investigate and obtain any necessary corrective action data.
• S upport other areas of product design engineering, as required
• Technical support to the Quality and Manufacturing Engineering teams for proposed designs .
• Undertake problem solving of design and product issues to resolve functional issues as they arise throughout the development and service life cycle.
• S upport Integrated Logistics Support (ILS) effort s to ensure a sustainable support solution.
• S upport Operations to ensure that components and assemblies can be manufactured effectively and efficiently
• Recognise the need for engineering change and raise engineering change requests as appropriate .

Critical outputs

• Successful delivery of concept designs and launch of new products, on time, to cost and on schedule .

Support first off and prototype builds .

Creation, checking and reviewing of CAD and detailed designs .

Experience

• Degree or equivalent (i.e. diploma or experience) in an appropriate Mechanical Engineering or similar discipline
• Previous experience working on design and development projects, inception to launch, within an engineer to order technical environment
• 5+ years of design experience using 3D CAD software, preferably PTC CREO 6.0 or higher.
• Familiar with the use of PLM software, preferably Windchill 10.1 or higher.
• Understanding of engineering drawings and design standards including Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing, ideally to automotive / defence requirements.
• Ability to communicate effectively on a technical level and contribute to team projects .
• Proficient user of MS office software.
• Familiar with configuration control and change management processes
• Familiar with the compilation of Design FMEA’s.
• Experience with the design of machined components of steel and aluminium.
• Able to obtain security clearances .
• Experience working with composite materials and knowledge of composite manufacturing processes (infusion, compression moulding, etc).
• Tooling design & design for manufacturability.
• Jig and Fixture Design for welding, assembly, and machining.
