Job description

The Design Build Director will lead the design and construction integration of large-scale infrastructure projects, with a strong emphasis on tunnel and underground transit systems. This role requires deep technical expertise in tunnel construction methods, stakeholder coordination, and risk management in complex urban environments.

The key responsibilities of the Design Build Director include :

  • Lead Tunnel Design & Construction Integration : Oversee planning, design, and execution of tunnel segments, including TBM operations, cut-and-cover, SEM, and shaft construction.
  • Geotechnical Oversight : Collaborate with geotechnical teams to assess and manage risks related to soil conditions, groundwater, and structural stability.
  • Stakeholder Coordination : Interface with transit authorities (e.g., Metrolinx), engineering consultants, and construction teams to ensure alignment on tunnel design and execution.
  • Construction Methodology Leadership : Provide strategic input on tunneling methods (e.g., EPB TBM, drill and blast, jet grouting, slurry walls).
  • Urban Constraints Management : Lead efforts to mitigate impacts of tunneling in dense urban environments, including traffic management, utility relocation, and community engagement.
  • Cross-Passage and Emergency Infrastructure : Oversee design and construction of cross passages, emergency exit buildings, and ventilation shafts.
  • Quality and Safety Assurance : Ensure tunneling activities meet safety, environmental, and quality standards.
  • Innovation and Lessons Learned : Apply best practices and innovations from past projects to improve efficiency and reduce risk.

Education and Qualifications

  • Minimum 20 years of experience in heavy civil infrastructure, with at least 10 years in tunnel project leadership.
  • Degree in Civil, Mining, or Geotechnical Engineering; Master’s preferred.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng) designation required.
  • Proven experience managing Design-Build and DBFOM contracts for major transit tunnel projects.
  • Strong understanding of geotechnical engineering, tunnel boring machines (TBMs), and underground station construction.
  • Experience with project budgets exceeding $500 million.
  • Proficiency in construction documentation, scheduling software, and document control systems.

Job Requirements

  • Experience in executing alternative delivery transportation / construction projects.
  • Experience with complex stakeholder environments and multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver projects on time and within budget under challenging urban and geological conditions.
