The Opportunity

As Deputy Fire Chief, you will be involved in planning, coordinating, and directing the operations of Thunder Bay Fire Rescue (TBFR). TBFR is well-trained to handle a broad range of emergencies and hazardous situations.

This role reports to the Fire Chief and includes the following responsibilities :

  • Supervising preventative maintenance and ensuring the availability of materials and services required for the operation of TBFR's buildings, apparatus, equipment, and property.
  • Managing TBFR operations and personnel, evaluating employee performance and emergency responses.
  • Developing, administering, and maintaining TBFR policies and procedures aligned with corporate and divisional objectives; planning and implementing short- and long-term goals; collaborating with the Fire Chief on strategic planning for effective fire protection services.
  • Participating in the development of the annual operating budget, assisting with the capital budget, and overseeing budget control and procurement processes.
  • Preparing reports, correspondence, and presentations; attending council, community, and public meetings; providing recommendations related to TBFR.

Ideal Candidate

  • Degree or diploma in fire service administration, public administration, business administration, or related field.
  • Minimum of five years of progressive senior-level experience in fire services.
  • Ability to obtain Community Emergency Management Coordinator (CEMC) qualifications.
  • Completion of NFPA 1021 Standard for Fire Officer Professional Qualification Level III, with Level IV to be obtained within one year of employment.
  • Completion of NFPA 1041 Standard for Fire and Emergency Services Instructor Level I.
  • Completion of NFPA 1035 Standard on Fire and Life Safety Educator / Public Information Officer Level I.
