Job description

Hours of Work : Shift Information : Days 30.0 hours per 1 week rotation

Position Profile :

The Deputy Chief Medical Officer (DCMO) of Integrated Regina Health is a key leader in Saskatchewan health care, partnering with system leaders and physicians to achieve our province’s health care goals. Reporting to the Chief Medical Officer (CMO), the Deputy Chief Medical Officer is responsible for developing and executing strategy in support of the overall business plan and strategic direction within their portfolio.

The Deputy Chief Medical Officer works in a co-leadership model with the Vice President Integrated Regina Health to lead the delivery of health care and meet the needs of our patients. This relationship involves a complimentary decision-making relationship that includes setting strategic direction, operational performance, service planning, and delivery and continuity of services. The VP and DCMO of Integrated Regina Health will co-manage through leadership integration to empower team thinking and achieve accountability, transparency and efficiency to drive both clinical and organizational performance excellence. The DCMO and VP will jointly hold responsibility for performance and leadership and report to the CMO and Chief Operating Officer for operations including integrated service delivery for Primary Health Care, Acute Care / Tertiary, Mental Health and Addictions, and Continuing Care. The DCMO and VP will jointly lead provincial planning and standards for the Primary Health Care Service Line.

The DCMO of Integrated Regina Health has direct accountability for physician leadership within the portfolio. They are responsible for both strategic and clinical leadership including developing and executing strategy in support of the overall business plan and strategic direction of the SHA. The DCMO leads to achieve an innovative and positive working climate and a patient-centric culture. S / he utilizes methodologies to improve effectiveness, quality and safety of healthcare delivery to ensure the SHA can provide optimum health care for the residents of Saskatchewan. The Deputy Chief Medical Officer works closely with the Ministry of Health and other system partners.

The SHA infrastructure and services consist of :

  • 64 hospitals with 2,500 acute care patient beds
  • Approximately 9,000 long-term care beds
  • Provincially coordinated quality, patient-centred care services, such as Acute hospital-based care, Long Term Care, Mental Health and Addiction Services, Primary Health Care, Public Health and many other community-based clinical programs designed to promote and maintain the health of the population

Qualifications :

Successful candidates for the above position will have experience in healthcare leadership and the establishment of frameworks and service delivery models for planning, implementing, monitoring, evaluation and quality improvement. Preference will be given to candidates who hold certification or are eligible for certification from the or to candidates who hold certification or are eligible for certification from the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC).

This individual should be a team player, be able to interact effectively with members of the public, clients, colleagues, staff and management, and function well in a high-volume environment with a commitment to the provision of high-quality patient, family and community-centered care.

Education :

  • Licensed medical practitioner in good standing with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Saskatchewan.
  • Canadian Certified Physician Executive Credential would be an asset.
  • Advanced education in Health Care Administration, Public Administration and / or Leadership Studies would be an asset.
  • Participation in the Canadian Medical Association’s Physician Leadership Institute would be an asset.

Experience :

  • 5+ years of experience in healthcare leadership / management / administration.
  • Experience as a medical leader, at a strategic level, who has developed and led innovative programs in a complex, multi-stakeholder environment.
  • Experience working in co-leadership roles and relationships.
  • Has knowledge of, and experience in, guiding health quality improvement processes and initiatives.

Additional Information

The Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) requires a criminal record check (CRC) from every potential SHA team member. The CRC must be dated within the past six (6) months and be satisfactory to the SHA. A vulnerable sector check (VSC) is required for individuals providing patient / resident / client care to vulnerable persons. Internal candidates may be required to provide a CRC and / or VSC during the recruitment and selection process.
