Dentist - Nanaimo Correctional Centre

Correctional Health Services

Are you an accomplished Dentist eager to provide services to a vulnerable and often overlooked clientele? Correctional Health Services, part of BC Mental Health and Substance Use Services, a program of the Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA), has recently integrated dentistry into its healthcare offerings. Correctional Health Services provides dedicated healthcare to clients within British Columbia's ten provincial correctional centres.

As a Dentist at Nanaimo Correctional Centre, you will deliver quality dental care to clients with significant needs. You will be part of an interdisciplinary team comprising physicians, nurses, mental health and substance use specialists, pharmacists, and other professionals committed to comprehensive healthcare.

What you'll do
  1. Examine, diagnose, and treat clients.
  2. Maintain and review individual dental records and x-rays; document assessments, diagnoses, and treatments in PAC.
  3. Prescribe medications for dental conditions as needed.
  4. Make referrals to dental specialists for examination, diagnosis, or treatment.
  5. Coordinate with external facilities when necessary for comprehensive care.
  6. Provide after-hours telephone consultations and attend to dental emergencies outside regular hours as required.
  7. Obtain approval from the Medical Director before undertaking non-essential dental procedures, such as bridges, gold fillings, extensive oral surgeries, braces, crowns, dentures, orthodontics, prosthetics, repairs, root canals, and outside services.
  8. Participate in case management discussions with PHSA.
  9. Engage in conference calls and in-service training sessions.
  10. Advise PHSA and the Medical Director on dental service provision and procedure standards.
  11. Ensure adequate dental supplies are maintained for clinic operations.
  12. Provide opinions and cost estimates for dental procedures and prosthetics.
What you bring
  1. A degree in Dentistry from an accredited institution.
  2. Certification or eligibility for certification with the Royal College of Dentists of Canada.
  3. An active license in good standing with the College of Dental Surgeons of British Columbia.

A Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) may accompany you on-site.
