Job description

The Dental Assistant works under general supervision. Sets up and take radiographs (digital and/or manual), and logs in x-rays taken. Assists in taking patient’s vital signs. Ensures all paperwork, documentation, and records are ready and available at the time patients arrive for clinic visits. Responsible for requisitioning, dispensing, and maintaining supplies and equipment in the assigned clinical areas. Reports clinic equipment malfunctions to the dental maintenance area. Responsible for sterilization of equipment assigned to the respective clinic. Works with faculty, residents, and students.

Daily Operations

  • Utilizes Dental Auxiliary Utilization (DAU).
  • Assists students, residents, and dentists in preparing for oral and maxillofacial surgery treatments by draping patients and arranging instruments, materials, and medications.
  • Passes instruments during procedures; may mix dental materials.
  • Assists with local anesthesia, nitrous oxide, oxygen, and intravenous sedation procedures.
  • Keeps oral operating areas clear during procedures using suction devices, irrigation, and gauze.
  • Takes patients’ vital signs.
  • Performs sterilization of dental instruments and maintains log books.
  • Captures digital radiographs for review and study.
  • Provides home care instructions to patients.
  • Works with the team to ensure the best patient experience.
  • Sterilizes and disinfects instruments and equipment; answers phone and takes messages.
  • Assigns chairs to students and maintains inventory of supplies.
  • Verifies and records patient demographic information.
  • Responds to patient messages promptly.
  • Requisitions and issues supplies and equipment to clinical staff.

Required Skills

  • Professional, courteous, able to multi-task, knowledgeable of dental terminology and HIPAA.
  • Familiar with dental instruments and equipment.
  • Knowledge of dental record keeping and reporting.
  • Understanding of sterilization and infection control techniques.
  • Ability to maintain inventories and establish effective working relationships.
  • Ability to evaluate and assist in chair procedures.
  • Understanding of technical and medical nomenclature.
  • Ability to file records alphabetically and numerically.
  • Courteous communication with the public.
  • Ability to perform other duties as assigned within scope.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • High School diploma or equivalent, completion of a dental assistant program, and registration with the State of Tennessee.
  • Prior experience with 2D and 3D radiology equipment preferred.
  • At least two years’ experience in a medical/dental office or related setting.
  • Experience with computerized scheduling and billing systems; bilingual preferred.
  • Certification in Dental Radiology and Dental Assistant National Board Certification required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
  • Nitrous Oxide certification preferred.
