Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Assist students, residents and faculty during diverse dental procedures with a broad patient mix.
  • Provide direct patient care in all dental specialties and help comfort patients before, during and after treatment.
  • Take and develop dental radiographs and make impressions for study casts.
  • Maintain and manage patient electronic data in axiUm per protocol.
  • Ensure instrument and equipment sterilization and routine maintenance.

Qualifications

MINIMAL FORMAL EDUCATION REQUIRED:

  • Successful completion of a recognized Phase II Dental Assisting/ Chairside course, including the advanced module.

EXPERIENCE:

  • One year of related experience in a dental office, 2 years preferred.
  • Experience with dental billing.
  • Current unrestricted active dental assistant licensure with the Manitoba Dental Association.
  • Experience with intraoral scanning and digital dentistry procedures preferred.
  • Experience using clinic management software (i.e. axiUm) to manage patient electronic dental data.
  • Experience working with patients of all ages.
  • An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to work well with students, staff and the general public is required.
  • Ability to maintain calm professional demeanour during times of high operational tempo and multiple demanding tasks are required.
  • Ability to assist and provide direct patient care in all dental specialties, including oral pathology, dental sleep medicine, oral surgery, periodontics, paediatric dentistry, prosthodontics, endodontics, undergraduate orthodontics, oral radiology and TMJ clinics is required.
  • Ability to communicate well with others is required.
  • Use specialized instruments and equipment is required.
  • Reassure patients to help reduce anxiety with dental procedures is required.
  • Provide assistance to patients with special needs is required.
  • A satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.

OTHER JOB RELATED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Current health care CPR certification.
  • Formal WHMIS training preferred.
Key responsibilities
  • Assisting students, residents and faculty during a variety of dental procedures working with a vast array of patients.
  • Assisting and helping to provide direct patient care in all dental specialties, including oral pathology, dental sleep medicine, oral surgery, periodontics, paediatric dentistry, prosthodontics, endodontics, undergraduate orthodontics, oral radiology and TMJ clinics.
  • Helping patients feel comfortable before, during and after dental treatment.
  • Taking and developing of dental radiographs.
  • Making impressions of patients’ teeth for study casts.
  • Asking about patient’s medical history and taking and recording of vital signs.
  • Communicating with patients regarding oral hygiene strategies to maintain oral health.
  • Performing management of patient electronic dental data on software system axiUm as per processes and protocol.
  • Performs the following intra-oral procedures in support of students and faculty; placing rubber dams, removing sutures, applying topical anaesthetic, desensitizing teeth.
  • Produce records such as photographs and study models to aid in diagnosis.
  • Routine maintenance of dental instruments and equipment including sterilization procedures.
  • Perform designated laboratory procedures.
  • Complete a variety of online and paper forms including inventory control forms, receipts, order forms, laboratory and X-ray requisition forms, insurance claims and dental charts by entering data, such as dates, times, quantities and costs.
  • Perform universal IPAC precautions while monitoring and reporting on student, staff and faculty compliance with College IPAC and Clinic Manual policies and procedures.
  • Skilled at using digital dentistry technology.
  • Assists in the training of new staff.
  • Maintains record of fees charged using MDA or College fee guide.
  • Participate in preparation, presentation and demonstration of the operation and maintenance of dental units, IPAC policy and procedures and care and handling of supplies to students.
  • May be required to perform related duties not exceeding skills and capabilities as required.
