Job Description Summary

The Nobel Biocare Oral Health Centre at UBC uses state-of-the-art technology to create a sophisticated, efficient space for learning, community service and research. The dental clinic in the Oral Health Centre provides the setting for the clinical practice component that is required for the completion of Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD), Dental Hygiene (RDH) and several graduate programs.

This position is for a highly experienced Certified Dental Assistant, with emphasis on the supervision of clinic staff in the Central Sterilization and Dispensing area. The supervisor ensures that daily operations are efficient and that an environment of excellence and professionalism is maintained.

Organizational Status

This position reports to the Senior Clinic Manager, Resources & Operations, who reports to the Clinic Director. This position will also take direction from the Clinic Operations Administrator.

Work Performed

  • Supervising, coordinating and prioritizing the work of lower-level Dental Assistants and technicians.
  • Coordinates daily scheduling for graduate program CDA support staff as needed *NEW.
  • Providing training and ensuring an understanding of the material covered. Recommending training requirements to manager.
  • Assisting with recruiting, orienting and developing new staff members.
  • Assisting in providing input and gathering information to assist management in the performance review process.
  • Informing faculty, patients and students of existing protocols and procedures.
  • Oversees inventory maintenance, and monitoring the ordering.
  • Assisting students in obtaining supplies, materials & instruments.
  • Maintains manuals and instructions for all materials, equipment and supplies.
  • Ensuring clinical sessions run efficiently.
  • Performing other related duties in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

This position is largely self-directed. Any problems would be reported to the Clinic Director. Errors in judgement could affect the smooth operation of the clinic, or could even jeopardize patient safety.

Supervision Received

Works independently under general direction, reports to the Senior Clinic Manager, Resources & Operations who reports to the Clinic Director.

Supervision Given

Supervises, directs and coordinates the work of dental assistants and technicians in lower-level classifications. Works with senior CDA 4 clinic supervisors to provide support to staff, faculty and students.

Minimum Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications

High School graduation and B.C. Dental Assistant Certification and Current License. Must be licensed and registered as a practicing BC Certified Dental Assistant. 5 years relevant experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Supervisory experience is required. Experience in providing staff training. Experience coordinating work processes.

Dental Office Management Experience Preferred.

The incumbent must be mature, efficient; detail oriented and have the ability to exercise tact and discretion.

The candidate must have excellent organizational and communication skills, must be a self-starter, accept responsibility and show initiative in determining work procedures in accordance with policies and guidelines. Ability to work independently and within a team environment.

Ability to take initiative, exercise discretion and judgement in complex situations.

Computer experience to an intermediate level with excel spreadsheet, word processing, e- mail and database software required.

Ability to maintain accuracy and attention to detail. Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks and priorities. Ability to communicate in a clear, attentive, and polite manner. Ability to effectively coordinate and oversee work processes.

Ability to assess training requirements and make recommendations to manager.

Ability to analyze problems, identify key information and issues, and effectively resolve issues.

Ability to deal effectively with a diversity of people.

Ability to provide quality service in a courteous, patient manner.

Ability to share team objectives.

Ability to lead by example, motivate staff and foster a cooperative and respectful work environment.

Ability to proactively resolve staffing issues that arise and communicate performance issues to manager.

Ability to provide thoughtful, timely communication and share information effectively.
