Job summary

Calgary Co-op is seeking a Deli Utility Clerk to ensure safe, efficient deli operations while delivering excellent customer service. The role supports stock and display integrity, merchandise handling, and adherence to health, safety, and environmental standards.

The position may involve cash handling and, in Bistro locations, assisting with food prep. The ideal candidate has Grade 9 or equivalent experience and bakery/retail background, with strong English communication and deli knowledge.

Qualifications

• Grade 9 or acceptable combination of education and experience.
• Bakery retail or related retail experience.

Responsibilities

• Provide customer service and maintain positive customer relations.
• Stock displays and facing; ensure presentation and stock levels.
• Handle merchandise, ensure quality, substitutions and price integrity.
• Perform general cleanup and keep department neat and organized.
• Follow Occupational Health & Safety, Food Safety and Environmental regulations.
• Care for equipment and report maintenance needs.
• Order merchandise and supplies; manage receiving and invoicing.
• Assist in inventory and shelf replenishment.
• Adhere to liquor regulations where applicable.
• Prepare deli platters and trays; handle cash with tills; assist in Bistro areas when required.

The Deli Utility Clerk is responsible to ensure customer service is provided through maintaining a safe and efficient operation while adhering to all Company policies, procedures and standards. The Deli Clerk position reports directly to the Deli Supervisor/Deli Manager, and the main responsibilities include:

• Provides customer service and maintains positive customer relations through the proper handling of customer questions, comments, requests and complaints. Effectively works in a diverse team environment in a proficient and friendly manner.
• Performs all aspects of the Deli Utility function including but not limited to; stocking displays and facing in an efficient and organized manner. Ensures display presentation and stock levels are maintained.
• Handles merchandise ensuring quality, minimizing damages and markdowns. Provides substitutions and ensures price integrity including price changes.
• Performs general clean up duties such as cleaning spills and display fixtures to ensure a neat and organized department is maintained. Responsible for ensuring the sales floor and back stock area are clean of cardboard and debris, including disposal of garbage.
• Performs duties following established Occupational Health & Safety, Food Safety, and Environmental regulations and policies to ensure the health and safety of all staff and customers.
• Ensures the proper care, use and maintenance of equipment and tools; and reports repair requirements to the Deli Supervisor, Manager or Duty Manager.
• Responsible for all aspects of ordering merchandise and supplies.
• Responsible for all aspects of receiving including reviewing / verifying invoices, returns, transfers, claims and proper storage of products.
• Assists in organizing and conducting inventory.
• In stores, which have liquor licenses, adheres to all rules and regulations as set out by the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission.
• Prepares deli platters and trays, operates roasters and in locations with a deli till, performs all aspects of cash handling procedures of the till.
• In locations with a Bistro, assists with customer service and/or food preparation when required.
