Job summary

First United Church Community Ministry Society is hiring a Shelter Resource Worker to cover an indefinite leave in a 51-bed emergency shelter in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside. The role supports residents, maintains a safe environment, and collaborates with staff to provide meals, activities, and crisis response.

The position requires strong communication, crisis intervention skills, and empathy for people facing poverty and complex mental health and addiction issues.

Qualifications

• Minimum Grade 12.
• Related training in non-violent crisis intervention.
• Basic First Aid Certification.
• A minimum of one year previous experience working in community-based services with at-risk populations.

Responsibilities

• Create a welcoming environment for shelter residents and the community, engaging individuals and building relationships.
• Act as first point of contact for shelter residents, handling intakes and guiding new users.
• Maintain smooth shelter operations with counts, door control, and safety checks.
• Coordinate meal times, sleeping area access, and locker usage for residents.
• Document and share information through HIFIS, incident reports, and meetings.
• Support team with Shelter Services and participate in community initiatives.
