Job Description:

POSITION PURPOSE SUMMARY:

The Behavioral Support Worker provides support to program staff in best practices for behavioral management of campers. The Salvation Army Oshawa Temple Day Camp seeks to provide excellent children’s programming that is inclusive of all families.

ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Monitor campers with needs/concerns using developmentally appropriate teaching and child behavior management techniques and work with program staff to facilitate a plan to support those needs, providing strategies for camp staff to use and teach on the protocols/procedures on behavioral supports.
  • Together with program staff assist with effective risk management; complete reports and file incident reports as required.
  • Review applications and medical forms of campers, assist with cabin allocations and provide info on camper needs.
  • Role models appropriate behaviors and attitudes.
  • Provide support to camp staff: Day Camp Coordinator, Assistant Day Camp Coordinator, Day Camp Counsellors, regarding behavioral support plans.

General Accountabilities

  • Perform other relevant duties as assigned, i.e., set-up, and camp cleanup.
  • Ensure the highest standard of health and safety for all campers, volunteers, and staff.
  • Assist with ensuring the emotional wellness and personal development of campers.
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and
  • safety policies and procedures.
  • Participate in the Summer Day Camp mentoring program for Day Camp staff and campers.
  • Support campers to develop socially, mentally, and spiritually.
  • Know and act in accordance with policies and procedures of The Salvation Army to ensure the safety and confidentiality of participants and information.
  • Act in cases of urgency or emergency in alignment with camp policies and procedures.

Written and Verbal Communication

  • Document, process, and reports as needed and provide recommendations to resolve issues and problems.
  • Support key stakeholders in understanding the implications of options and decisions.
  • Create and maintain a list of reports required for health and safety compliance purposes.
  • Support external reporting requests as needed.

Perform other related duties as required.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • This is a temporary full-time position is based on 35 hours per week.
  • Working environment is in a day camp setting both indoor and outdoor in generally agreeable conditions; with the following exceptions, exposure to tantrums and noise.
  • Ability to lift/move up to 29 lbs.
  • This job requires reaching, bending, and stooping frequently, working in a standing position for long periods of time.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Submit as required a Police Record Check (vulnerable sector check) that is acceptable to The Salvation Army in its sole discretion.
  • This position may be funded in part through the Canada Summer Jobs Program and the following represents the applicant criteria:
    • aged 15 to 30 years at the beginning of the employment period;
    • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment**; and,
    • holds a valid Social Insurance Number;
    • and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
  • An ongoing condition of employment is the ability to maintain immigration status to legally remain and work in Canada which is supported by valid immigration documents.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:

Education, Qualifications and Certifications:

  • Completed a minimum of one (1) year of post-secondary education in health science, social services, or recreation administration.
  • A current valid, Standard First Aid and CPR Certification is an asset.
  • Completion of Crisis Prevention Institute Training (CPI) training is required. Will Provide

Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements:

  • Minimum of one (1) year of prior related experience working with behaviorally challenged children.
  • Previous experience in a camp setting is an asset.
  • Experience with encouraging and assisting others in supporting children and their behavioral needs.
  • Able to handle difficult situations with maturity and the ability to adapt if necessary.
  • Able to implement behavioral support during the day-to-day camp program operations.

Compensation:

The target hiring range for this position is $17.61 to $22.01 with a maximum of $26.41.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
