The Business Systems and Information Management Branch within the Ministry of Advanced Education supports the ministry through technology, data, and information technology governance.

The Opportunity

We are seeking a forward-thinking and technically skilled Data Scientist to join our Business Systems and Information Management Branch. Reporting to the Director, Information and Risk Management, the successful candidate will lead advanced analytics initiatives, develop integrated data systems, and provide strategic insights that shape decisions and program delivery across the ministry.

As a Data Scientist, you will:
  • Design and implement data models, predictive analytics, and visualization tools to support ministry-wide initiatives.
  • Lead complex research and evaluation projects, including data sourcing, integration, and interpretation.
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive information systems and data standards.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support data-driven decision-making.
  • Present technical findings to senior leadership and stakeholders in accessible, actionable formats.
  • Represent the ministry on intergovernmental committees and collaborate with external partners.
  • Mentor colleagues and contribute to a culture of continuous learning and innovation.
Our Ideal Candidate will:
  • Demonstrate flexibility and a willingness to contribute wherever needed to support branch and ministry priorities.
  • Be proficient in tools such as R, SQL, IBM Cognos, Microsoft Power BI, ArcGIS, and enterprise platforms (Oracle, Microsoft, IBM).
  • Demonstrate solid knowledge of database architecture, data governance, and data privacy principles.
  • Possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to diverse audiences.

Typically, the knowledge and skills required for this position would be gained through the successful completion of a graduate degree in data science, computer science, public policy, statistics, or a related field. An equivalent combination of education and work experience will be considered.
