Position Summary

As a member of the Research Data Management team, the Data Governance & Ethics Lead will establish and oversee data governance initiatives and data ethics frameworks to support research data management across Canada's Digital Research Infrastructure platforms and services. The role reports to the Manager, Research Data Services.

Responsibilities
  1. Develop data governance aligned with organizational goals, defining objectives and creating implementation roadmaps.
  2. Develop a data ethics framework aligned with organizational programs and strategies.
  3. Lead the Controlled Access Management for Research Data initiative, including planning, partnerships, and leadership at a national level.
  4. Support development and implementation of new data-related initiatives, ensuring compliance with relevant laws and regulations.
  5. Maintain knowledge of laws, policies, and practices regarding sensitive research data across Canadian jurisdictions.
  6. Work with cybersecurity teams to ensure data privacy and security, supporting policy development.
  7. Evaluate and implement data governance tools and technologies.
  8. Ensure Indigenous Data Sovereignty considerations are integrated into governance and ethics practices.
  9. Assess and improve data governance practices continually.
  10. Establish partnerships and promote best practices in data stewardship.
  11. Represent the organization at conferences, panels, and public engagements on data governance and ethics topics.
  12. Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  1. Master’s degree in information management, library and information studies, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  2. 3-5 years of experience in academic research environments; additional experience is an asset.
  3. Experience in research ethics or research libraries is highly desirable.
  4. Strong understanding of research data management and repository platforms.
  5. Excellent communication skills for diverse audiences.
  6. Organizational and time management skills.
  7. Bilingual in English and French is a strong asset.
