Job summary

Aviva Canada is seeking a Data Engineer to support our enterprise data modernization journey. You’ll build robust data pipelines on Snowflake and AWS, contribute to analytics and AI initiatives, and collaborate with a forward‑thinking, cross‑functional team.

The role requires strong SQL, Python, and Terraform skills, plus experience with relational and NoSQL databases, data quality governance, and data visualization tools.

Qualifications

  • 6+ years of professional data engineering experience delivering multiple high-impact projects.
  • 3+ years of Snowflake, dbt Core/Cloud, and AWS cloud technologies.
  • 3+ years of programming in Python/SQL; knowledge of Java is a plus.
  • Deep knowledge of relational databases (Snowflake, PostgreSQL, Aurora) and NoSQL databases (MongoDB).
  • Experience with data visualization tools like Snowsight, Streamlit, Qlik, or SAP BO.
  • Strong SQL, Python, Shell, and Terraform proficiency with focus on performance and reusability.
  • Hands-on with orchestration tools such as AWS Managed Airflow or similar.

  • Own code quality and maintainable solutions across data platforms.
  • Champion data governance and quality, test planning and validation.
  • Resolve complex data issues via root-cause analysis.
  • Lead agile ceremonies and collaborate with architects, QA, and delivery teams.
  • Mentor Data Engineers and drive engineering excellence.
  • Produce comprehensive technical documentation and knowledge sharing.

Aviva Canada is looking for a Data Engineer to support our enterprise data modernization journey. You’ll use your expertise across modern and legacy platforms to build robust data pipelines and systems that power analytics and AI initiatives. In this role, you will contribute to the design and implementation of data solutions that support our growing business and next-generation Snowflake platform. What You'll Do
  • Data Pipeline Development: Lead the design and implementation of high-performance data pipelines using tools like dbt Core/Cloud, ensuring scalability and maintainability.
  • Code Ownership: Write and maintain clean, reusable code in SQL, Python, Shell, and Terraform.
  • Quality & Governance: Champion data quality, governance, and cataloging practices; create and review test plans to validate data solutions.
  • Issue Resolution: Perform root cause analysis and implement effective solutions for complex data issues.
  • Agile Delivery: Lead agile ceremonies, foster a delivery-focused mindset, and ensure timely execution of data initiatives.
  • Mentorship: Guide and mentor Data Engineers and project team members, elevating team capabilities and engineering excellence.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with architects, designers, QA engineers, and delivery teams to ensure cohesive and customer-centric data products.
  • Documentation: Produce and maintain comprehensive technical documentation to support implementation and knowledge sharing.
What You'll Bring
  • 6+ years of professional experience delivering over 5 high-impact data projects from inception through warranty.
  • 3+ years of Snowflake, dbtCore/Cloud, and AWS Cloud Technologies.
  • 3+ years of experience with coding in multiple programming languages such as Python, Java, etc.
  • Deep knowledge of relational databases (Snowflake, PostgreSQL, Amazon Aurora), big data platforms (Hadoop), and NoSQL databases (e.g., MongoDB).
  • Skilled in data visualization tools such as Snowsight, Streamlit, Qlik, and SAP BusinessObjects.
  • Expert-level proficiency in SQL, Python, Shell, and Terraform, with a strong focus on performance, reusability, and maintainability.
  • Strong technical and business presentation skills; able to identify and address gaps in data designs and processes with both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Hands‑on experience with orchestration tools like Zena and AWS Managed Airflow.
  • Proven ability to thrive in fast‑paced, ambiguous, and high‑pressure environments.
  • Passion for solving real‑world problems using data‑driven insights to deliver impactful business outcomes.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to lead teams and influence cross‑functional stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with insurance industry processes and systems is a strong asset.
  • Experience in operationalizing AI/ML & GenAI models is a plus.

What You’ll Get
  • The salary band for this position ranges from $100,000 to $125,000. Please note that individual salary is determined by factors such as job-related knowledge, skills and experience, as well as internal equity.
