Position Overview

The Globe and Mail is looking for a full-time data editor focused on business journalism to join our digital storytelling team.

The successful candidate will be part of a growing team that uses data, code and multimedia to produce high-impact journalism for The Globe's audience across all platforms. The team is a multidisciplinary group of designers, developers, data journalists and visual editors. We work collaboratively across all aspects of The Globe's coverage, including long-term investigative projects, breaking news and immersive story formats. In this role, you will have the opportunity to be part of The Globe’s most ambitious work.

We are not prescriptive about tools and technology: editors on the digital storytelling team are journalists first and should be comfortable — and excited — about continually learning new skills and techniques in the service of telling the best story possible. We build on what we learn together as a team, and we value inclusive, accessible design and a supportive, collegial workplace.

Responsibilities
  • Gather, process, analyze and visualize data to support daily and enterprise business journalism.
  • Collaborate with reporters, editors and visual journalists on data-driven stories and projects.
  • Spot check data work done by other team members and journalists in the newsroom.
  • Build and maintain tools that aid the work of reporters and editors in data reporting.
  • Act as an ambassador for data literacy in journalism across the newsroom.
Qualifications
  • Experience working on data-driven stories and projects in a newsroom, particularly with a business focus.
  • Experience with acquiring and maintaining datasets of varying sizes.
  • Experience with data analysis tools like Excel or Google Sheets and coding languages like Python or R.
  • Experience visualizing data with a demonstrated understanding of best practices for graphic presentation of information in journalism.
  • An ability to juggle multiple projects of varying deadlines and sizes.
  • Additional qualifications that would be an asset in this role :
  • Experience working with the Datawrapper API.
  • Experience with database management best practices and relevant AWS services.
  • Knowledgeable about available business-related datasets.
  • Familiarity with data visualization libraries.

APPLICATION : Please include a cover letter with your resume.

SALARY : This position is classified as a Content Editor in Group C of the Editorial Collective Agreement.
