Position Title: Data Analyst, Investigations

Department: Enforcement

Location: Toronto

Status: Permanent Full-Time (Hybrid)

Day in the life of:

As a self-regulatory organization, the Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization (CIRO) is committed to setting high regulatory standards for the investment industry, safeguarding investors, and supporting the integrity of Canada’s capital markets. Join a growing team and contribute to the dynamic and complex world of Canadian capital markets.

As a member of the Investigations team, the Data Analyst will play a supporting role in Enforcement department’s current analytical workflow and assisting in the development of new tools. This includes developing and implementing quantitative methodologies to enhance the investigational program and better use technologies for visualization and dissemination of information.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Learn and use existing quantitative analytic processes that provide statistical analysis of market related issues and infractions.
  • Support the Senior Data Analysts in the development of new tools to streamline and automate current computational processes and analytics related to all investigations.
  • Perform in-depth analysis on transactions and market data to generate reports for business users.
  • Assist Senior Data Analysts in developing tools related to management information systems.
  • Build visualization tools for interpretation of market participants trading strategies.
  • Participate in the building of training modules and educate team members on optimal use of newly developed processes.

Key Skills and Competencies:

Must-haves

  • Bachelor’s level degree in the relevant fields such as Computer Science, Engineering, Statistics, Math, Physics, Information Management, Finance or Economics. Relevant experience that heavily emphasis on data analytics skills will also be considered. New graduates are welcome to apply.
  • Working knowledge in extracting and manipulating data using SQL from relational databases (e.g., Microsoft SQL Server) as well as working with large scale datasets.
  • Working knowledge of coding in programming languages such as Python for quantitative analysis or data mining.
  • Competence with visualization tools such as Microsoft Power BI.
  • Proficient in MS Excel, experience using Microsoft CRM and Office 365.
  • Strong verbal and written communication and presentation skills.
  • Work well in a collaborative and inclusive team environment.

Nice to Haves

  • Understanding of the functioning of the capital markets, including trading systems, practices, and market activities.
  • A working knowledge of trading strategies of participants and their clients is an asset.
  • The Canadian Securities Course (CSC) and Trader Training Course are considered assets.
