Job summary

The City of Calgary is seeking a Cyber Security Advisor to lead architecture programs and translate business risk into security controls. You will engage with stakeholders, develop reference designs, and drive risk-informed decisions across the enterprise.

Qualifications

• A diploma in Computer Science / IT / Cyber Security / Business Admin / Data Science with eight years in cyber security.
• A degree in Computer Science, IT, Cyber Security, Business Admin, or Data Science with five years in cyber security.
• Recognized cyber security or risk management certifications such as CISSP, CCSP, CISM or CRISC.
• SABSA or TOGAF certification would be a strong asset.
• Senior-level experience in cyber security architecture, risk management, operations or incident response preferred.
• Experience designing and governing cyber security architecture with reference architectures in complex enterprise environments.
• Experience across two or more domains: project management, data security, network security, IAM, cloud security.

The City of Calgary's Cyber Security Business Unit safeguards the information, technology, and operational systems that enable the delivery of services to Calgarians.

As the Cyber Security Advisor, you will be responsible for authoritative and strategic cyber security architecture outcomes while contributing more broadly to Cyber Security's mandate and delivery of services. Through engagement, collaboration, and governance leadership, you will translate business objectives, risk tolerances, and contextual influencers into a comprehensive security architecture program and nexus between business risk and opportunity. Primary duties include:

• Define, govern, and evolve security architecture principles, reference designs, models, standards, control strategies and their performance measures, and protection patterns.
• Utilize threat modeling to identify attack paths, define appropriate cyber security service requirements and control objectives.
• Provide architectural leadership, oversight and assurance, guide and influence partners & interested parties through architectural authority rather than direct reporting relationships.

Qualifications

• A diploma in Computer Science, Information Technology, Cyber Security, Business Administration, Data Science, or a related field, combined with eight years of employment experience in cyber security, security architecture, data protection, cyber risk management, or a related function. OR;
• A degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Cyber Security, Business Administration, Data Science, or a related field, combined with five years of employment experience in cyber security, security architecture, data protection, cyber risk management, or a related function.
• One or more recognized and current cyber security or risk management certifications, such as CISSP, CCSP, CISM, or CRISC, are required; combinations of education and experience may also be considered.
• SABSA or TOGAF certification would be considered a strong asset.
• Demonstrated senior-level employment experience in cyber security architecture, cyber security risk management, cyber security operations or cyber security incident response is preferred.
• Demonstrated employment experience in designing, documenting, and governing cyber security architecture with reference architectures and enforceable patterns in complex enterprise environments is preferred.
• Demonstrated employment experience in two or more of the following domain areas would be considered a strong asset:
• Project management, requirements gathering and analysis, change management;
• Data security, data protection, AI security, AI governance, AI model lifecycle security, analytics security, or secure use of AI-enabled solutions;
• Network security, infrastructure security, segmentation, secure connectivity, exposure management, hybrid environments, or Zero Trust implementations;
• Identity and access security and/or governance; privileged access, authentication and authorization architecture; access lifecycle management, or Zero Trust-aligned identity controls;
• Cloud security, SaaS security, cloud-native controls, shared responsibility models, platform configuration, or secure cloud integration patterns.
• Success in this position requires:
• Empathy, highly developed relationship-building, and communication skills;
• Significant tolerance for ambiguity.

Working Conditions: Occasional coordination with vendors, project teams, or other interested parties outside of regular business hours may be required to support deadlines or time-sensitive activities.
