Overview
As a member of the military, Cyber Operators conduct defensive cyber operations, and when required and where feasible, active cyber operations. They liaise and work collaboratively with other government departments and agencies, as well as with Canada’s allies to enhance the Department of National Defence (DND) and the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) ability to provide a secure cyber environment. They monitor CAF communication networks to detect and respond to unauthorized network access attempts and provide cyber support to meet the operational requirements of the Navy, Army, Air Force, and joint enablers.
A Cyber Operator has the following responsibilities :
Work environment
Cyber Operators work with extremely sensitive information in a high-security environment, within restricted-access facilities. They are required to work shift work throughout their careers but often have opportunities for regular business hours. They serve in sea, land, or air environments, including deployed operations worldwide. They can also participate in exchange programs with allied nations.
If you choose the Regular Force, after training, you will be assigned to a base with potential relocations. If you join the Primary Reserve, you will serve part-time with a Reserve unit, typically working one night per week and some weekends, with options for full-time employment.
Entry plans
The minimum education requirement is a Secondary high school graduation diploma or equivalent, including specific courses in Math or Computer Studies / Science / Programming.

NCMSTEP : The CAF will fund successful recruits to attend a diploma program at an approved Canadian college, including basic training, on-the-job training, and full salary and benefits.
Training
The initial training includes Basic Military Qualification (BMQ), followed by college-based cybersecurity training covering software development, network awareness, cyber event response, and analysis. Post-college, training at CFSCE in Kingston covers cyber operations, data analysis, security, and equipment operation. Opportunities exist for advanced skills training in areas like vulnerability assessments, digital forensics, malware analysis, and cyber event mitigation. Career progression and promotions are available for qualified personnel.
Part-time options
This role is available part-time within the Primary Reserve at various locations. Reserve members serve part-time, typically evenings and weekends, with pay, benefits, and potential deployment opportunities. They can serve in the Navy, Army, or Air Force, conducting defensive cyber operations and supporting CAF missions. Training is provided at home units and specialized colleges, with opportunities for further specialization.
