Customer Service Support Summer Student (Animal Care & Control) - 4 months

1 temporary full-time position for 4 months intended specifically for students currently enrolled in a post-secondary institution, commencing in May 2025

Increasing the City of Edmonton’s livability, the Animal Care & Control Centre looks out for everyone's safety, including animals on the streets. In this role, you will help lost or stray pets in need. The work environment will have multiple competing priorities and elements to address with restricted timeliness. Animal Care & Control requires a courteous and professional individual who can provide exceptional customer service and educate the public about responsible pet ownership.

As a part of the team, you will:

  • Act as the first point of contact at the front counter for animal intake, release, trap rentals and pet licensing
  • Educate the public on responsible pet ownership practices including compliance with Municipal Bylaws and Provincial Acts
  • Create and maintain Pet License accounts using POSSE
  • Intake stray animals and record all necessary information in Shelter Buddy
  • Release animals back to owners, ensuring all information is documented accurately and mitigate risks of fraudulent claims of ownership
  • Work in collaboration with Animal Control Officers to impose the fines and fees for stray pets
  • Process payment transactions for pet licenses, animal release, fines, trap deposits and donations
  • Count, reconcile and deposit funds collected and prepare daily bank deposits
  • Maintain public waiting areas shared workspaces and common areas
  • Perform other related duties as required
Qualifications
  • Current enrollment full-time at a post-secondary institution, preference given to those in an animal science, veterinary technology, veterinary medical assistant or related post-secondary certificate, diploma, or degree program
  • Experience handling and being around cats, dogs and other animals
  • Experience with Google Workspace Applications or equivalent applications
Assets
  • Previous customer service experience
  • Student Membership with the Alberta Veterinary Medical Association
  • Experience using or referencing Payment Card Industry Compliance Standard (PCI)
  • Experience using or referencing Shelter Buddy and iNovah
Skills Required for Success

  • Hours of Work: 40 hours per week. NOTE Animal Care and Control Facility is open 6 days a week, 10 am - 6:30 pm Monday - Saturday. Weekend work will be required.
